Well, Wolfpup seems to think that juries are full of them like 70+ years ago in the deep South.
Pleonast is obviously correct about the jurors having little to no disagreement, but we also obviously don’t know what they’re agreeing on. Based on commentary that I’ve heard over the years, though, when juries come to a verdict quickly, that verdict is usually “guilty”.
I was on a ~7 week criminal (white collar) trial jury. I think we deliberated about 2 and a half days.
Yeah, traditionally that tends to skew pro-defense. But this is a tough one to guess. On the one hand juries are notoriously unwilling to convict law enforcement, on the other the prosecution I think made a pretty compelling case. I honestly don’t think I’d be surprised either way.
At least we know there isnt a lone hold out. I was worried about that.
My guess is manslaughter.
I’m guessing your obsession with Black Bloc anarchists has left you in the dark about the amazing number of vocal, non KKK, racists we have in America.
It ain’t a hung jury, that’s for sure.
Holy cow. Can’t imagine how any 12 people would be able to agree that quickly that NO conviction was supported.
And given that, I’d imagine at least a couple would have been leaning towards the greater charges. Which leads me to suspect they agreed to the greater charges. Which doesn’t bode well for Derek.
I don’t think I’ve ever been this nervous about a verdict. I know what I would like it to be, but you never know.
In the case of OJ, they found one little shred of reasonable doubt and agreed on it and then decided that there was no need to deliberate further. Given the premise that there was one piece of reasonable doubt, that was the correct decision.
Sure, now, there are scads of new white supremacist groups. But back in early/middle 20thcentury as Wolfpup was talking about, the KKK was the big one.
And they are all pretty much stupid assholes.
And I am not "Obsessed’ with Black Bloc anarchists , however they are one of the leading groups turning peaceful protests into riots. But by no means the only one. They actually brag about it and are considered terrorists by most Euro nations.
And I can’t imagine they’d all agree to the most serious charge. The quick deliberation makes me think it must be a compromise verdict.
That’s what I’m thinking. I’m guessing it’s Murder Three. Like, 2nd degree is too hot, manslaughter is too cold…
Given the seriousness of the topic, I don’t think people would compromise easily. To me, that suggests it was all or nothing. I’ve been reading this through this thread and it seems like the prosecution was very convincing and the defense was very weak but I’m still guessing it’s an acquittal. I hope I’m wrong.
I will be floored if they convict him of second degree murder.
Reading the statutes, third degree murder seems the most appropriate of the charges.
The jurors deliberated for ten hours over two days. It wasn’t that quick
It wasn’t super-quick, but definitely faster than most expected.
it sounds like they were fairly well in accord.
my office just emptied out as people want to get in front of any traffic blocks. i can walk home so i’m watching on the computer at the office.
getting more and more nervous.
Biden will be addressing the nation afterwards regardless of the verdict. So nice to have an adult in the room.
i figured on it being tomorrow.
no questions from the jury, that was interesting.
Agreed. I wonder if they just ran an experiment in the jury room of one person kneeling on another and went with whatever the result was.
