I nominate Coke Enneday, the Sherlock Holmes-parody “hero” of the Douglas Fairbanks silent short The Mystery of the Leaping Fish, who decades before Cheech & Chong or the Freak Brothers championed the copious use of white pharmaceutical powders. This was a detective who kept a bandolier of syringes handy under his coat, and fought the Chinese crime syndicates not to eliminate the opium trade but to prevent its monopolization. The possibilities are endless, yet as far as I know there isn’t even any tribute fanfic on the web.
