Misogyny on the SDMB, Sept. 2018 edition

The title you’ve chosen is ‘Misogyny on SDMB’ Why then is this discussion constrained to ATMB ?

Why yes, it will surely stray into moderation. But let’s just be clear, it’s not anyone attacking the mods is it? So much as the mods ASKING us for input. Do they really need their safe zone for this discussion?

Why exactly is THAT discussion confined to the most constrained, least visited forum only ?

Especially when everyone can see with their own eyes that you’re cool to Bro all over EVERY. SINGLE. FORUM.
Any topic, any thread, any time.

I find that terribly off putting. Not conducive to frank discussion, in my humble opinion.

If you want people to engage with you and be open and frank, maybe don’t invite them to the kiddie table.

Interesting ideas; this is thinking about the board in a way in which I hadn’t before. While it’s true it’s not fair and even-handed, it’s hard to see what would really be lost by it in this case. Would misogynists leave the board in droves? Would that be a bad thing?

However, I would hope the review following the insta-suspension would actually be fair and even-handed. It’s possible to drop a stinker without realizing it, one’s history ought to be kept in mind, and those with a history of skating too close to, and sometimes slightly over the line, might finally be mod-able.

Expecting slippery slope argument in 3-2-1…

I don’t understand what you are saying here.

This discussion is not constrained to ATMB. You may discuss any aspect of misogyny and you may discuss any SDMB forum.

If you are asking why this thread is here in ATMB, that’s where posts about this message board go. Hence the forum name.

I mean, the first thing is to punish the situation described in the other thread. No one should be able to condone attempted rape on this message board. Punish it under existing rules, or create a new one.

Allow people to call out misogyny outside the Pit. Sure, maintain the post/poster distinction. But at least let us say “That posts is misogynist drivel, and you should be ashamed to have posted it.” Stop with this tendency to see attacks on the post as attacks on the poster.

Intervene when a thread not about misogyny pushes off into a misogynist direction, telling them to cut it out and make another thread if they must. That would have been great for the Kavinaugh thread, too.

I’ll throw in transmisogyny, since we’re here: treat it as even worse. It’s two things in one. Any calling anyone by the wrong pronoun is a personal attack. And if a thread not about trans stuff gets directed that way, remove it.

Maybe make those arguments for misogyny and such only allowed in GD, and keep it out of the other forums. They are a big, contentious issue, and that means GD. If a thread drifts that way, tell them to take it to GD.

That’s enough spitballing off the top of my head for now. But none seem out of the spirit of this board. None completely silence anyone. Maybe I shouldn’t go for the compromise positions first, but I figure they have a better chance of being implemented.

I’ll endorse the idea of more liberal use of topic bans. Some posters derail any discussion of rape, sexual assault, or mistreatment of women in general, and I think the board would greatly benefit if those posters didn’t take part in those discussions.

Never mind.

And continually pretend that they’re not really saying what pretty much everyone else is reading.

Oh, we’re back here again?

Like lots of women posters, I’m pretty disgusted with the entitled bullshit spewed by a few bad eggs. I’ve been trying to report their grossest posts when I see them. But if mods are following a discussion, surely they’re seeing them too? Surely they’re keeping track of the repeat offenders? And surely, one day, a mod will have the bottle to actually hand down some consequences?

One big reason previous discussions have gone around and around with no resolution is because certain posters don’t want resolution. They show this by immediately jumping in with what-aboutisms, hair-splitting, and demands for impossible bright lines. For instance, requesting that every possible misogynistic remark be listed would supposedly aid those who are too dim to figure this out for themselves, but it also enables the posters who demand these things to skate juuust to the inside edge of what’ll get them modded.

We also have the “but people will never learn if we don’t let them argue it out here” issue. Yet the vast majority of those who post misogynistic comments (or racist comments, but that’s another topic) not only don’t change their minds regardless of criticism; they use the threads to sharpen their claws and clearly delight in doing so.

Look, I’m all for open discussions. It’s fine for people to post opposing views. But there’s a big difference between constructive discussion misogynist spewing. This comment from Left Hand of Dorkness in the ATMB “rape culture” thread says it well:

This, this, this,

Some good moves were made during the whole Skald thing. It led to a rule change and consequences being enforced when Skald tried to play games and get around them. But you can’t leave it at that or this will continue to happen.

While I’m relatively sure no one gives a tinker’s damn what I think, for the record, I have seen improvement. I’m far more proactive in reporting, and I’ve seen action (more like mod notes or suggestions) taken. That makes me happy. By the same token, I’m not seeing warning issued, especially when it comes to repeat offenders, nor am I seeing the most egregious offenders banned. That makes me feel somewhat condescended to - like I’m being figuratively patted on the head with a “there, there, Missy, see we DO care” attitude. If the mods are serious about this, they (imho) need to act like it, and a little zero tolerance would go a long way in showing that.

Untrue.

The mods should look at it like this.

What’s worse?

Losing one misogynist male poster or five frustrated upset female posters?

Aren’t we trying to get new members and not run off more?

At least ban the posters who are obviously and gleefully trolling.

As a newer member who chafes at the boy’s-club atmosphere here, heck yeah I’m glad to hear your POV represented. High five, Missy2U. :raised_hand:

That’s a good question. Lots of women on the board seem kind of pissed off. I kind of wonder if you don’t end up with a survivor type situation though where you only end up with a couple people on the island - sort of like if the boundaries become more of a closing circle till in the end only a few people are standing inside.

I personally find the suggestion to ban members* because of their beliefs (however distasteful and abhorrent I might find them) distasteful and abhorrent. And I find it really educational to hear their versions of Utopia no matter how much their’s conflicts with mine. It gives me even more resolve to ensure that the next generation of young men grow up decently and within a world where women are their peers, not just chunks of flesh to be used and abused.

Sure, folks like SA and his acolytes seem particularly resistant to accepting that their view of the world is not actually good, decent or healthy, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us should stop trying.

It’s just taking a bit longer than we thought.

*There’s been one or two banished for such, and I agreed wholeheartedly with the decision.

Sure. So let’s take some posters with unpopular opinions, or perhaps those being currently targeted by another message board. They simply report every single post by the member, until he gets punished. Even if the post is “I Like Pie” - in Cafe society asking about favorite desserts. EVERY. SINGLE. POST.

Not only can it be done, it has been done.

Abuse the system to get what you want? I can’t see this quickly going south.

I know I am Pollyanna-ish. I just want everyone to get along. But, there are some real stinkers who foul the air in here. They need to go. Everyone knows who they are, it’s no big mystery.
