Miss America contest

Just had some questions (is this Cafe Soc? Sorry if not) about the contest.

Do women from the deep south ever not win it? I know pageantry is more of a southern thing.

Also, 54 women competed…how is that possible? Even with Puerto Rico and DC, that’s only 54. What gives?

Well, we’re up to 56 state quarters, so maybe that’s the new standard?

District of Columbia Quarter

Puerto Rico Quarter

Guam Quarter

American Samoa Quarter

US Virgin Islands Quarter

Northern Mariana Islands Quarter

It looks like the states with the most winners are California, Oklahoma, Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Michigan. Only Oklahoma would be considered perhaps “southern” and even then not in the usual sense and certainly not “Deep South”. Mississippi and Alabama have seven winners between them but not for the last several years.

Indiana, Michigan, Oklahoma (x2) and Alabama were the last five winners, in that order.

Whoops… left 2010’s Miss Virginia off the list.

Embarrassed to say I watched this last night. They announced 53 contestants, not 54, and I particularly paid attention to see who the extras were: DC, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands.

I know Texas had some winners back in the 70s when I actually watched (hey, I was a kid).

I’m surprised at how many states have been shut out so far.

Pacific NW and New England only have 1 each, CT was 1933 and Oregon was 2002. I would not have figured 21 states have no winner.
