I’ve heard this phrase on TV, seen it in comic strips, seen it here, and then there’s that move mentioned in the thread title. I have no idea what it means. Can someone please explain?
The title is awarded in the Miss America pageant by a vote of the contestants.
Also, it should be said that “congenial” more or less means “nice”. So the Miss America contestants select the contestant they think is the most congenial, i.e. the nicest.
It was awarded for the first time in 1939.
Followup question - anyone here who would, in conversation, chose congeniality over genial? I’m not asking about the Websters rule; I want to know how you’d play it by ear.
Thanks for the enlightenment.
