Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries

I found this recently on streaming and I know there are other Dopers who have found it, but thought it was worth a plug.

Downtown Abbey meets Veronica Mars. A smart ass female detective in 1920s Australia. The costumes are wonderful if you are into clothes, and the dialog is snappy.

All those old cars & trucks aren’t bad, either. Can hardly wait for the second season to hit Netflix, I want to see that million dollar Alfa and those other vintage racers!

I enjoyed the first series quite a bit and look forward to a second.

Did you hear about it on Go Fug Yourself too?

I watched part of the first episode last night. Kinda silly but I did enjoy that it seems to be a mystery series about a lady detective who screws around like a male one.

For those who live in Chicago – WYCC (Channel 20, our second-string PBS station, run by the Chicago Community College system) has been showing them as part of their holiday “Mystery Marathons” (eight so far).

As mysteries go, they are gorgeous, but don’t always make a lot of sense. The book series on which they are based is also … not all that good.

But I have read a few of the books and watched every episode shown.

If you are a mystery fan and want something different, try MHz’s “International Mystery”, carried on 20.3 in Chicago (check MHz’s site to see if MHz is available where you are). We have had a few (low-activity) threads about it here.

Yep.

I needed kinda silly. My son has gotten into Walking Dead and it just isn’t my thing.

The first episode is good, but like a lot of series, it gets stronger about episode three.

Thanks for the rec. I have been getting re-acquainted with Murdoch Mysteries lately, and I loved me some Poirot, so I think this show will nuzzle in there nicely.

We look through catalogs we get showing interesting DVD series, then get them from Netlix. The last few episodes, which explore the great mystery in her past are a bit of a letdown. The “Making of” feature on the last DVD is very interesting, since reproducing 1920’s Australia was not that easy.
But they are great fun, my wife liked the books, and I’m looking forward to season 2 coming out.
But I do wish she were better able to hold onto her gun.

These fit in quite nicely with Murdoch. We watched the first episode of Murdoch Season 6 last night, with a cameo appearance by the Wright Brothers. If the rest of Season 6 is as good as the first episode we’re going to be happy.

The Murdoch books are more like the Murdoch movies as opposed to the series. My wife didn’t like them much. The movies are meh - different cast, different feel, but the series is great - except for the short detour into spiritualism and the excessive soap opera of seasons 4 and 5.
