So, I was driving to work, listening to the radio, and an advertisement for the television show, The Fugitive came on. It’s a remake of the old television show of the same name; a guy, convicted of a crime he didn’t commit, escapes, and then spends the entire season running from the law while trying to catch the guy who actually committed the crime. They were talking about some contest to get people to watch the show. So, of course, I changed the station. Hey, I listen to the radio in my car to hear music, not talking. If I wanted to hear boring people talk, I would turn to KQED, thankyouverymuch.
But it got me to thinking. Why just do a simple remake? Why not throw a whole new twist into it? Reality-based TV shows seemed to hook people in really well this past season. Why not do a reality-based Fugitive-like show? You’ve got your runners and your hunters, each split up into little groups. The groups are film themselves progressing, and the network takes the raw footage, edits it together, and shows it on the air. Sort of a combination of America’s Most Wanted, Survivor, with a little Blair Witch Project thrown in.
You could even pattern it a little after Assasin, where there aren’t hunter and runner groups, but every group is hunting one group, and chasing another group. That might get a little complex, though
Anyways, I just wanted to get that idea out of my system. If anyone wants to grab the ball and run with it, feel free.
There is a new show being planned kind of like this.
Contestants will try to get from point A to point B. They will film themselves doing this (or something, I don’t know all the details). The viewers will watch this and if they see the contestant call the “police” to turn them in. It is the goal of the contestant to get to point B without being caught by the viewers.
Obfusciatrist, I almost hate to say this, but I think I have seen something very much along those lines on T.V. in Britain. It was a few years ago; I think it existed for only a short time, but can’t be certain, and, of course, I can’t remember the name of it! I am sure it was all about getting from A to B without being “caught” though.
I wouldn’t be surprised Celyn, most of the reality game shows we’ve been seeing lately started out in Europe. I think we should be looking to Japan, however, as they have the truly cruel, humiliating, and funny game shows.
I think there is something similar planned, called “Mole”, I believe. I could be wrong. Its a little different, if I recall correctly (does anyone get the impression I don’t know what I’m talking about?), in that there is a group of people (Road Rules style) who are trying to complete various missions. In this group there is one sabateur, who tries to screw things up. Hilarity ensues, I would guess.
There’s already a reality sow ovre here where people have to escape from “prison pound” within 30 days. There should, later this year, be one where someone has to stay ahead of a tv show-hired bounty hunter for 28 days to win the money.
But missed opportunities? How about the sdmb pillowfight? (admittedly it would probably have to go out after midnight, or on an adult channel, but it would sure get the viewing figures!)
You have a group of ten strangers. They are brought together in the bottom of a ship that is sinking. (actually an elaborate set) Water is coming up around their feet and they must find a way to the top. (I think ten levels to get through) There are obstacles to overcome of course. Mental Puzzles and physical challenges. The catch is playes can “drown”. Referee will mark a person out under certain conditions and there will be divers on hand to help them out. The prize structure is this. All players get an equal share of the prize money regardless of how many of them get to the top. The catch is that the money is a million for each player that gets out. So if only one person gets out then each player gets 100,000. If all ten get out then each gets a million. This makes working together the key. Of course the easy answere to each puzzle will be to leave someone behind but the players have to think up a way to ‘leave no child behind’. (where have I heard that pharse befor?)
What do you think? It would be like a sequel to Titanic!!
