Missing someone in New Orleans? I'll try to help (volunteering at Astrodome)

Hi,

I’m going to work the 7PM-7AM shift at the Astroarena medical facility tonight and probably tomorrow night. My buddy and I are going to go work in a tag team (he’s an intern so he’s carrying the all important MD while I’ll just do the med student scut).

If you are missing someone or looking for someone, email me (email in the profile) or post a name in this thread, I’ll print out a list, and if I run into them at the Astroarena, I’ll email you back/post it back in this thread.

Ed

I’m not missing anyone, but I wanted to say thank you edwino for doing something positive during such bad time.

Here’s a big, invisible, virtual pat on the back for you, edwino. Attaboy!!!

i have an idea, but I don’t know how workable it would be.

could you bring a couple of legal pads and some pens with you, and put it where people could write down a phone number and a short message, like:

212-555-1234 Mom, Jim and the boys are ok. Love, Ellie

and then scan the sheets and e-mail them to a few of us who could make the calls this weekend?

I’m sure a lot of us have free minutes on weekends, and we could put some minds at ease with news of a loved one.

grassroots efforts are better than no effort at all.

I think this is a great idea and I’d be happy to call people’s relative’s / friends.

That’s a great idea, CantUseMyRealName, and if you need help making calls you can add me to the list. My email is in my profile.

(Free weekends & no limit long distance VoIP home phone.)

FANTASTIC idea!!! Count me in, please!! I will be checking my e-mail constantly this weekend in anticipation of a response. casey1505(at)yahoo(dot)com

In the meantime, I am looking for Charlene Lafleur Winston and family from Metairie, LA, just in case. She is a cousin.

I would also absolutely volunteer to call people. My email is in my profile.

Will do. I’ll bring in a few pads, but I’m kind of limited by the amount I can carry/fit in my pocket. I’ll let you guys know how it goes and I’ll try to post messages.

Ed

I will call or e-mail too. My e-mail is in my profile.

I think we should also request a code word, so the people we’re calling don’t think we’re kooks. Maybe just an identifying phrase, like, “I’m calling for Jim Smith, who has a birthmark on his right knee. He’s at the Astodome and he’s fine.” Also, remember the people we’re calling will want more information, so if there’s a way the family members can contact the Astrodome might be helpful.

VOIP user here too so I’d be happy to make any calls–even international if needed. Email in profile…

That is a great idea – I’ve been trying to think of ways to get messages to people, but I couldn’t come up with any way to do it from Seattle.

Count me in! I think my email’s in my profile, but I’ll check back here in case it isn’t.

 Yeah, that wouldn’t skeeve me out in the least.

How about, “I’m calling on behalf of Jim Smith, from the 9th Ward section of New Orleans…”?

What’s VIOP?

i was thinking along the lines of:

hello. i’m calling on behalf of _______. i’m one of a group of volunteers who is passing along messages that were given to another volunteer at the astrodome.
the message is ____________________ .

If you have enough messages to go around, I’d love to help too.
My e-mail is in the profile.

I’ll make calls. I have free nights and weekends on my cell. E-mail is in profile.

VOIP is internet-telephone…So basically free long distance and cheapo international rates.

Thanks to edwino and Can’tUseMyRealName for the great ideas, and quilter and I are more than happy to contribute to this valiant effort. I’m not sure that the code words are necessary – I’d be happy to hear from anyone with any reputed message from a family member in such circumstances – but we’ll go along with whatever requests come along from Ed.

I’d be willing to make a few phone calls, if you need me to.

I’m in, e mail is in my profile
[hijack] Right after the 94 Northridge quake I could not call my wife’s parents, but I could get out on my companys WATTS line to our headquarters in NY. I asked one of our people in NY to call her parents in Oregon to tell them we were OK. Words cannot tell just how grateful they were to get that phone call. They still think my company is the best.[/hijack]
