Mississippi school district outraged about student survey

I’m not sure myth 5 is a complete myth. I haven’t seen much of an increase in teacher effectiveness as a result of a master’s degree in education.

If teaching is anything like other jobs then most of the stuff taught in school is secondary to what is learned in the real world.

Can you elaborate? I watched a movie recently that really lionized her, but I got the impression that the filmmakers weren’t being very objective about it.

I think it depends on WHEN you got your Masters and how it compares to people who have been teaching for 40 years.

edit: imho, I’d sooner hire someone with a MA in History than MA in Ed.

The concept is nothing new. When I entered publishing in 1967, I was told to include illustrations that featured many cultures in our books. When I began teaching in 1969, multi-culturalism was emphasized in textbooks. Why not? Diversity reflects reality.

But the most important thing that people outside the cohesive classroom don’t seem to get is that when things seem to click between the students and the teacher, the students realize that we are like them – no matter what “race,” gender, or age we are.

The students didn’t seem to see skin color as an issue. Too bad racists got involved. They reminded me of the white people of Mississippi and how they talked about “outsiders” half a century ago.
