Mississippi Senator wants "public hanging" ??

Now explain away her caught comments on suppressing liberal voters:
*
“And then they remind me that there’s a lot of liberal folks in those other schools who … maybe we don’t want to vote,” Hyde-Smith is heard saying. “Maybe we want to make it just a little more difficult. And I think that’s a great idea.”*

I can’t wait to hear what she really meant, or how if liberals didn’t want their votes suppressed they should become conservatives.

Short answer is “No,” such a person has no business being in government.

That said, if every violent, hateful, race-baiting trogdolyte was deemed unsuitable for public office, the Republican Party would no longer exist. They say stupid shit like this precisely because that is what their voters want to hear. The Trump experience has proven to them that the more audacious and hateful the message, the more Republican voters will eat it up.

Hyde-Smith said it was supposed to be a joke but it’s probably not that funny to college students living in Mississippi (even conservative ones).

I don’t claim to. I can only know what they say and do. She’s said enough.

“By their fruits ye shall know them”

I don’t pretend to know what’s in her mind, either. But her words and actions sure speak loud and clear.

I’m not a politician or from Mississippi, but if I was Mike Espy I’d be tempted to run a reverse Willie Horton add. Maybe something showing some Klansmen or burning crosses, with the insinuation that Hyde-Smith is secretly in favor of that sort of thing. If it’s looking like Espy is going to lose the runoff anyway, what would he have to lose?

And in this case we’re talking about some very strange and bitter fruit.

And now Walmart has donated to her.

They’ve changed their mind - Walmart wants its donation back.

Rev. Barber: “When Walmart thinks there’s a moral problem w/ a Senate candidate, you know it’s bad…”

Roll Call has changed its rating on this race from Solid Republican to Likely Republican.

Hyde-Smith, 2014: “I enjoyed my tour of Beauvoir. The Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library located in Biloxi,” Hyde-Smith wrote. “This is a must see. Currently on display are artifacts connected to the daily life of the Confederate Soldier including weapons. Mississippi history at its best!”

Again, Mississippi specifically said it seceded in order to preserve slavery. If you’re a Mississippian (if that’s the correct term), you’ve got three centuries of European-descended history to be proud of. If you choose to single out a war to preserve the right to own other human beings as the part of your heritage you want to identify with, then you’ve just fallen into a moral black hole.

It’s the appeal to the Base. And the basest.

Criminals used to be executed by a “public hanging” and it was political hack phrase, just as “Lock them up!” is now. Judge Roy Bean and all that.

Hyde-Smith’s Super PAC is being funded by Sean Parker.

Didn’t know who Sean Parker was until I clicked the link.

Is it just me, or are Silicon Valley billionaires and megamillionaires increasingly throwing their weight around in destructive ways?

Although she will likely win, her race-baiting might actually backfire in a state like Mississippi, which is the blackest state in America. There’s no need for her to do this. She’ll win if she just shuts her mouth. A fair number of whites are already motivated partly by their racism, and a lot of racists will be motivated to vote against a black candidate. She doesn’t need to inspire blacks to team up with the less racist whites.

If there’s a good thing that’s come out of the past several years, it’s the realization that Silicon Valley’s most definitely NOT going to use techology to save the world. The reality is that they’re using it to scam investors, create economic bubbles, prevent people on either side of the Bay from obtaining affordable housing, and “disrupting” cultural and political norms everywhere else.

MS may be the blackest state in America, but probably the state with the smallest fraction of whites voting Dem. So I’m not holding out a lot of hope.

But I think it’s important that the party try to win this thing, even if the odds are long.

  1. There’s no reason to skip this one. They’ve got plenty of time to raise money before 2020.
  2. Fighting rather than rolling over is how you convince small donors to contribute. At a minimum, the DSCC should think of this campaign as an ad campaign for itself. If they fight well here, people will replenish the DSCC’s bank account, and then some.

Absolutely agree with you.

I think they need to fight this one. Espy’s an attractive candidate who can appeal to some of Missisippi’s voters the same way Doug Jones did in Alabama. Espy will probably lose, but I also think that Mississippi’s the kind of state that with the right kind of economic message might be in play for socially conservative but economically moderate dems in the future.

Smith is a terrible candidate. She fumbled the lone debate.

Apparently, she couldn’t even read her cheat sheet accurately.
