Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens was indicted this afternoon for felony invasion of privacy.
On the same night that he gave the State of the State Address last month, news broke that he had tried to blackmail a woman he was having an extramarital affair with. He had compromising photos of her and threatened to release them to the public if she told anyone about the affair.
I, for one, am happy to see this lying dirtbag go down.
It seems that Gov. Greitens had taken a compromising photo of a woman and threatened to use it if she talked about their affair. He later told her it had been deleted, but the indictment seems to stem from the fact that he did in fact distribute the image to at least one 3rd party.
If that image exists and the prosecutor has it, I’d bet that Gov. Greitens will soon be ex-Gov. Greitens and new cell block resident “STFU” Air-rick.
I can distinctly remember hearing his name floated as a future Presidential contender. He was the second youngest governor ever; he was a Navy SEAL, and who doesn’t like Navy SEALs? He seemed like a moderate Republican and a decent human being, not a Trumper. It sounded like promising credentials, and he would also have the distinction of being the first Jewish president - less of a disadvantage for a Republican than a Democrat, I’d say. In other words, while I’d prefer a Democrat, he’s the kind of Republican who I wouldn’t have said, “aw, fuck” if he were elected.
Well, I guess that timeline has been officially aborted.
I live in Kansas not far from the Kansas City area, so I see him in the news a lot. And ever since this guy got elected he has seemed like Missouri’s own “L’il Trump”. Inexperienced politically, shady campaign financing, putting cronies in charge of state departments, and now the “fake news! I didn’t do anything wrong!” I’m disappointed they let him out on bail instead of letting him stew in a jail cell for a few days.
“We’d never prosecute one of our own for this” is the message they are sending out, but I don’t think it’s going to be received as well as they think it will.
The statement says that the law Greitens was charged under “has never been prosecuted in this way” and is only being used now because Kim Gardner is a “progressive anti-law enforcement Democrat”. In the span of two sentences they complain that she’s enforcing the law and that she’s anti-law enforcement.
The statement goes on to call for a bi-partisan group of legislators to find out “what’s really going on” instead of having “St. Louis liberals controlling the future of our state”. Here’s an idea: we can convene a bipartisan group of everyday people, pulled more or less at random from Missouri citizens, and task them with finding out what’s really going on. Kim Gardner and the governor can both present their arguments, and these citizens can try to sort out the facts. We wouldn’t need a big group of people. Twelve should be plenty.
We know how this is going to play out. He’s going to resign by the end of the month. Less certain is will he go to trial or plea bargain to a lesser charge.
And the MO House of Representatives is gearing up for possible impeachment proceedings.
This is another thing that’s hilarious about the MO Republican Party’s statement calling for an investigation by the legislature in place of the criminal investigation. Oh no, guys, you get both. There’s a criminal charge against him that’s not going away. Completely separate from that is the issue of whether the state legislature is going to remove him. Does the MO Republican party not get that, or are they just hoping their followers don’t?
