I don’t because that would mean Kamala becomes Acting-President.
Yeah, we could do (and have done) much worse. But if that happens before the election, there is at least some question as to her electability.
McConnell is the 4th-oldest Senator, behind Feinstein, Chuck Grassley, and…Bernie Sanders. Sanders is about five months older than McConnell.
I rarely think of Sanders being one of the dodderers in the Senate. But he’s right there.
I’m also 62, and see the sail of retirement on the horizon. I honestly feel myself slipping a little bit.
I’m making documents and videos of the projects I’ve created so that others can step in with out too much trouble.
The state of Texas is taking away school libraries in Houston and making them some sort of detention center for students. I sure hope they let them read/do homework.
It’s good to see your support of and confidence in Kamala Harris.
Ah - the siren call of the near-retirement worker who wishes he will be hard to replace!
(My BIL just retired from a programming job. He thought he was going to be consulted in how to distribute his work after he left and more. He was shocked at how quickly he was treated as a dead man walking. IMO, he erred in giving as much notice as he did!).
So as to not hi-jack this anymore, I’m just going to say I will be hard to replace. I’m working with a coworker to write things that will do things that I do. My code is going away. The GIS industry moves forward at an astonishing pace.
After 35 years of doing this, I’m finding it hard to keep up.
THAT’S why no one who wants to be President should be allowed to. We should draft decent human beings instead.
(You can tell I used to be a Libertarian, pre-Dope; my politics always sounded ‘innovative’, but would have been totally shitshows if anyone tried to implement them.)
You need to post this to the Workplace Rants thread, or the retirement one. People have been discussing this very issue.
And suddenly the age for mandatory withdrawal is raised to 105.
Calls to mind Cincinnatus at the Plough. Of course, the story isn’t all roses….
Despite his relatively old age, he worked his own small farm until an invasion prompted his fellow citizens to call for his leadership. He came from his plough to assume complete control over the state but, upon achieving a swift victory in only 16 days,[1] relinquished his power and its perquisites and returned to his farm. His success and immediate resignation of his near-absolute authority with the end of this crisis (traditionally dated to 458 BC) has often been cited as an example of outstanding leadership, service to the greater good, civic virtue, humility, and modesty.
Our state has a method for reporting “Unsafe Drivers”, usually coming from family members worried about elderly drivers, but also possibly based on a police report. Upon receiving that, the driver has to retake the road test. Too bad there’s nothing similar in congress. The six-year term of senators is even longer than anyone gets to renew their driver’s license (every four years).
What do you think should be on the test?
McConnell, more than any other politician, is responsible for the breakdown of politics and the hell we’re experiencing today. His attitude of power before all else, and “fuck you, that’s why” has broken responsible politics forever.
Fuck 'em. I hope it was painful.
This. Fuck that asshole.
IMHO he shares that “honor” with Newt Gingrich.
Amen to that sister.
Yeah Newt started it. But McConnell honed it.
I’m the reverse - I’d be happy to be left to coast in the months (or more) leading up to my retirement. I’m a bit too far away to be counting the days, but I think I’ll be perfectly happy to never be thought of again (at least in work context) after I leave.
The gruesome twosome.
