The last living member of the Jimmy Hendrix Experience bites the dust.
Such a great, great drummer. Nobody played like Mitch Mitchell, and it’s hard to imagine anybody else drumming with Hendrix on his best-known recordings. (I am not a Buddy Miles fan.) I think Hendrix’s best band was with Mitchell and Billy Cox, and I guess Cox is the last regular Hendrix accompanist around.
Apparently Mitchell spent his last days playing lots of shows with the Experience Hendrix tour. That’s fitting and very cool.
From the AP:
“PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Mitch Mitchell, drummer for the legendary Jimi Hendrix Experience of the 1960s and the group’s last surviving member, was found dead in his hotel room early Wednesday. He was 61.”
Only 61. Damn.
Oh wow. That’s a tragedy, he was so young.
RIP Mitch.
With all due respect, 61 is a ripe old age for British rock drummers of that era.
A very unique style he had, and one of the few musicians who really managed to challenge Hendrix in a positive way. Seemed to have a genuine friendship too, and was a sensitive posthumous producer. It’s a shame the Experience may have eclipsed anything else he did.
RIP Mitch.
One of my favorite drummers. RIP Mitch.
