MLB: 2025 Postseason

I have a rules question regarding the Phillies loss. If the pitcher had thrown to first to get the third out a fraction of a second before the runner from 3rd touched home plate, that run doesn’t count?

As noted upthread, my understanding is that the rule says if the pitcher had thrown to first, and that runner was ruled out, the run would not have counted, even if the runner coming from third had crossed home plate prior to the putout at first. The putout at first takes precedence.

This is correct. In fact all three runners could race around the bases and score before the batter/runner gets put out at first and none of them would count as long as he was put out before reaching first safely.

Thanks much for the explanation, and apologies for rehashing ground already covered.

I have to say, as an outsider looking in, that feels way more realtime to me than my perception of baseball as a more turn-based affair.

Oh, I see it as a more turn-based. If that batter doesn’t make it to first he’s out, period. He failed in his turn at bat so his teammates can’t score.

It’s the alternative situation that’s more real-time: if the batter hits a single and tries to make it to second but gets thrown out there, it depends on whether the other runner scored before or after he’s put out. In umpire lingo that’s called a “timing play”.

Skubal throwing a gem, but Tigers only up by 1. Detroit needs one more run and I’ll be able to breathe.

What a game so far. Too bad it’s down to the bullpens; both starters pitched gems.

Skubal had 13 K’s in 6 innings? Insane.

1 out away from extra innings. How many playoff deciding games have gone to extras?

Damn what a game. Going to extras. Un-fucking-real battle.

If you’re a pitcher named Skubal, your nickname has to be ‘Screwball’ doesn’t it?

Going into the 11th now. Great game.

In the 12th.

Bottom of the 12th. Tigers blew it with two runners in scoring position and one out. Suarez getting McKinstry at home feels like the play that does the Tigers in to me.

Is that the first double play of the game? Holy cow.

Man, what a game. Whoever wins this deserves to go on and lose the WS to the Dodgers.

Also, A.J Pierzynski is fucking terrible. Who hired this guy to call games?

From most punchable face to most punchable commentary.

It is a fucking game! M’s will win, but they will beat the Dodgers! The only reason the Dodgers are the Dodgers is because they have a fat bankroll. I will love to see the bankroll discrepancy lose.

I’m so glad the bullshit ghost runner isn’t in play in postseason baseball.

I’ve been rooting for the Mariners, but whenever Gleyber comes up my ‘loyalty’ shifts to the Tigers.

QFT. Bottom of the 13th.

I don’t understand why scoring goes down as the innings go on and on. Shouldn’t it go up, since the pitching quality gets worse and worse?

Alright Seattle, let’s end this thing. Or not. Lots of free baseball. Man, I wish the Yanks had fought Toronto this hard.
