MLB: 2025 Postseason

Is it just me, or have errors became far more commonplace on the stat sheet? I remember when it seemed to be the default norm for a game to end with no errors from either team, 0-0, but here in this postseason, it’s hard to remember any games that didn’t have errors.

It’s just you.

Errors have been declining (some would say it’s artificial with more lenient scoring), but in the end fewer errors are getting scored.

This is getting painful to watch. A good old fashioned spanking.

The reports of the demise of the Jays might be just a bit premature.

Yeah, it’s clearly not the Ms’ night.

Hopefully the Brewers have some fight in them, too.

Wasn’t there a recent 7 game series in which the visitors won every game?

M’s fan here, breaking my silence to note that Dan Wilson had clearly given up the game after Kirby gave up (how many?) runs. He put in the team’s worst relievers, and the final score reflects that. At first I was kinda pissed, but upon reflection – hey, let’s see their stuff, and not show them ours. Regroup. Randy Arozarena, notably streaky, broke his silence, and then Cal got a homer. I was at the game, and vibes were electric despite the situation. Here’s to good baseball, and may the better team win!

October baseball is something I could get used to!

I think the 2023 ALCS? Rangers-Astros?

This got me thinking what happens if a pitcher gets injured in the warm-up I am sure it is rare but it could happen, I am a casual basefall follower but know it has happened in cricket and soccer.

Sure, it can happen that someone gets hurt, or comes in feeling sick and can’t power through it, causing a pre-game substitution in the last hour or two. That wouldn’t affect the exchange of cards that formalizes the lineup, though, as the cards are handed over just a few minutes before game time and the pitcher is generally done with warmup by then (or close to it). There’s a similar mid-game scenario, where a relief pitcher is brought in but feels discomfort during warmup and leaves before facing a batter, but that’s obviously unrelated to the pre-game lineup announcements. A situation where they got to the point of handing over the lineups but then suddenly had to scratch the pitcher and make a literal last-minute sub due to some fluke injury seems so implausibly unlikely that I’d be amazed if it had ever happened. If someone knows of an example, I’d be interested in the specifics.

The relief-replacement scenario, incidentally, is connected to one of my favorite little bits of baseball trivia, the story of Larry Yount, whose major-league pitching career begins and ends with a single game appearance and zero batters faced.

According to the all-knowing ChatGPT, there have been two such series, in all of MLB history:

This was one of them.

The other was the 2019 World Series, in which the Nationals defeated the Astros.

That series had just one 1-run game. The other games were decided by margins of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 runs.

Two quick comments:

  • Now that TOR has come alive, it’d be neat if MIL did the same. Keep the whole pot boiling all the way to the end.

  • Tonight’s game times are different than previous evenings. Don’t goof.

That’s reminiscent of Adam Greenberg. Cubs prospect who was hit one back of the head with the first pitch he ever saw as a big leaguer, suffering a compound skull fracture. That was in 2005. He played in the big leagues exactly one more time; after an online petition prompted the Marlins to offer him a one-day contract in 2012. He played in one game, for one at-bat. He struck out on three pitches.

It looks like the World Series is going to shape up as a battle of high-scoring offense (Blue Jays or Mariners) vs. tough defense (Dodgers or Brewers.) Both AL teams racking up big numbers and both NL teams keeping it low.

It’s just you.

Teams used to make way, way more errors.

In the ALDS games this year, the four teams made only eight errors, total, in 9 games.

Back in the day that was amazingly sure handed.

What is going on with the Brewers? I don’t think the Dodgers are this much better a team. Of course, I suppose it helps when you don’t need the bullpen in game two.

It is kind of puzzling, yes. The Brewers had been the No. 2 ranked team in the league for batting average this year.

Third straight game of scoring just 1 run. I wonder what the record is for lowest scoring LCS by a team?

Surprising for sure, but many MLB DS, CS, or WS series have been decided on who inexplicably got hot (or went cold) for the week in question.

Heck, there have been mediocre teams all season who got warm in Aug, and then barely squeaked into the low wildcard slot only to catch fire in the postseason and go on to win the WS.

On to Game 4 tomorrow in the NLCS!

As to ALCS game 4 tonight, it’s 0-1 in the top of the 3rd as I type. I think the comment a few posts ago that the AL teams will be high offense isn’t proving out quite as strong as asserted. This game might still turn into a high scoring slugfest, but I’m thinking not.

It’s now 2-1. Sometimes these runs come in bunches.
