Didn’t see that anyone had started the monthly MLB thread, so I thought I’d start it. I like this earlier start to the season, although the schedule was a bit odd. Since the Reds had a day game, why not let them go first as they used to before the start the season on a Sunday night ESPN game era?
Anyway, the season really gets going on April 1 with a full slate of games.
I didn’t get so see any of the afternoon games because of work, but I caught most of the SF/LA game last night. Both pitchers looked really good, especially Kershaw (which I was cheering for, having him on my fantasy team). I’m realled psyched about the Red Sox kicking off; I’m trying to figure out how I can sneak out to my car this afternoon to catch at least some of it on XM radio.
Great start for the Yanks. CC pitched well giving up 2 earned over 6 and the bullpen pitch 3 perfect innings with Joba getting the Win, Soriano the Hold and Rivera the Save.
Granderson had himself a great day with the go ahead homer and 2 excellent defensive plays. Russell Martin excited people with his base-running. Teix got a 3-run homer to boot earlier.
The Yanks only got 5 hits but took advantage of the 5 walks they worked.
A very good start and a very cold and nasty day. Did any games get snow? Also what a miserable way for the Brewers to start the season. Ouch.
I’m basking in the moment. Both of my teams are tied for the lead in the NLWest. San Francisco has lost every single game they’ve played this season. It’s a glorious day!
As a Dodger fan, the LA/SF game was amazing. Kershaw was pitching out of his mind, Kuo and Broxton took a couple of beats to settle down, but then both got the job done to close out the 8th and 9th. Matt Kemp walked like crazy and the offense got a couple of hits.
Like one of the bloggers I follow said, it was sort of the expected season in a microcosm. Fantastic pitching, slightly below average offense and bad defense.
But we squeaked it out against the Giants on opening day. That’s all that really matters right now.
This is when I wish I had ESPN. This Phillies/Astros game looks amazing. What are the Phillies swinging at?!? Halladay was pulled to start the 7th after throwing 101 pitches. Myers is at 6.2IP with 58 pitches thrown. That’s efficiency.
Myers had a good game. But, not as good as that. I think the stats must have been screwed up when you looked at them. He wound up pitching 7 innings with 85 pitches.
Albert Pujols’ record-breaking career continued yesterday - unfortunately, the record he set wasn’t a desirable one - he became the first man ever to ground into three double plays on opening day.
My wife is a Phillies fan so, theoretically, I have a rooting interest for them, but I was so happy for the Astros to see them doing something big on their opening day. I am sort of bummed they blew it.
So it turns out that the version of Jacoby Ellsbury that doesn’t have 6 broken ribs is much better than the version that does. At some point I’ll get over the reflex of holding my breath every time he falls down.
I hadn’t thought about John Mayberry Senior in a long time but I always respected him as a Royal on those teams that battled the Yanks in the late 70s/early 80s.
I just noticed this in the quote. I will be the first to say that I miss the hell out of Russell Martin and that I am upset that he and the Dodgers let such a relatively small amount of money come between them. I am a fan, but that steal was totally out of character for him. Don’t get me wrong, it was exciting as hell, but it’s not exactly what he did even when he was in his prime. I wouldn’t expect a whole lot more of that out of him. Poor base-running skills are what cause his near career ending injury last year.
Huh? I know it’s not Juan Pierre we’re talking about - but 15 SBs a season from a catcher is exciting, and a very good sign for a guy who’s knees have been taking a massive battering the last couple years.
