MLB: April 2011

I tried that a few years back. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it didn’t. Some proxy services are very limited in their bandwidth, which is fine if you just want to view a page, but no good if you want to watch hi-def video streaming.

Also, over time, fewer and fewer proxies worked at all. I suspect that MLB was probably trying to identify them and block them.

Mariners are 2-0, with 11 runs scored and 4 allowed. Encouraging.

Ichiro got his 2,248th hit, breaking Edgar Martinez’s team record.

The Rangers are on the verge of sweeping the Red Sox. It’s only one series, but if the Rangers can get out to a commanding lead in the AL West, that would give them the ability to rest the oft injured Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton more this season.

I hope they pull it off. Sadly the Yanks are down 10-7 going into the 9th.

I have both Detroit’s Max Scherzer and New York’s Phil Hughes as starters in my fantasy team, and of course i get screwed by a slug-fest.

On the bright side, the Orioles (yes, the Orioles!) just completed a pretty convincing three-game sweep of the Rays.

Woo-hoo!

The Indians pulled off a triple play today against the White Sox.

What’s the deal with starting Young at 2B today? Showcasing him for a trade to the Mets, maybe?

The Giants finally remembered to put their fielding gloves on the correct hand yesterday. They pitched well enough to win the first 2 games, and even batted well enough…though it was nice to see them put a few hits together.

I’m having a great time watching 2011 NL Rookie of the Year Brandon Belt at first

They got 1 run (a homer) on 5 hits on opening day. On any given day in the major leagues, that is not really batting “well enough” to win.

I misspelled “Phillies”. :smack:

If I may, for a moment, rant about the blackout rules …

As you may or may not know, major league teams get certain protected territories for broadcast blackouts. This hearkens back to the days when baseball owners feared radio broadcasts of their games, because who’d come out and buy a ticket if they could hear the whole thing for free on the newfangled wireless? Naturally when TV came along, the poor dears hyperventilated once more about what a hit their ticket sale profits would take from the wholesale broadcasting of their games. And let’s not even mention the horror if a competing team started showing their games in my territory! Why, no one would want to come out to the ballpark at all!

Long story short (I know, too late), I live in Iowa. You probably wouldn’t be surprised to know that this is protected territory for the Cubs and White Sox. It’s also protected for the Cardinals. And the Twins. And the Brewers. And the Royals. Yep, you heard right … SIX major league teams are blacked out in the ENTIRE state of Iowa.

Now this isn’t so bad if your TV provider carries, for instance, Comcast Chicago, because they carry a ton of White Sox and Cubs games. WGN has the Cubs on sometimes, but not nearly as much as they used to. But if you happen to have the good sense to not be a Cubs or White Sox fan, and you want to watch the Cardinals … well, maybe, if one of your local stations gets on their network, you can watch them on Sundays. If you’re a fan of the Brewers, Twins, or Royals, don’t plan on watching them on ESPN, though … you get to enjoy ESPN News instead, because they’re blacked out.

Drives me batty. I like me some Twins, and I used to get excited when I saw them on the ESPN schedule, but I figured out pretty quick that was a recipe for disappointment.

I think the blackout rules are stupid and outdated. Who’s with me? Selig? Anyone? Selig?

Interesting trivia note; Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz both homered for the Rangers in each of the Rangers’ first three games of the season, something never done before by teammates in major league history.

Went to today’s Jays-Twins match. The Jays lost but it was a highly entertaining game, and it was nice to see a decent sized Jays crowd on hand; it makes it a lot more fun. The buzz around the team is palpable. It’s not likely they’ll win it all in 2011, but the team seem to have a plan for the first time since… well, since the 2003-2004 offseason, I’d say. People seem to LIKE the team (except in the case of Jose Bautista, who is worshipped.)

JP Arencibia had no hits today but I thought he had very good at bats. Travis Snider is also having excellent at bats. Brett Cecil looked great for four innings but in the fifth his location was seriously messed up. He had not thrown a lot of pitches so that’s not promising.

The Twins’ new second baseman, Tsuyoski Nishioka, who won the Japanese batting title last year, had a really bad weekend. I imagine he has a good chance of coming around, but he looked like he was really struggling with the fastball, and he was erratic in the field.

The Indians obviously need good pitching. We’ve scored 20 runs in the first 3 games and only won one. Find a pitched to hold the other team to one, and we have no problem rolling over them.

Impressive work from our catcher-at-first-base today. Needed a little guidance to finish that triple play but I was impressed when he almost caught the previous popped-up bunt!

I decided to start a blog covering only the positive aspects of each Indians game, written by someone who just likes to watch Indians baseball. Check out The Positive Tribe, let me know what you think. I’m so tired of hearing how much the Indians suck…hopefully I can point out what makes me come back every day.

First place. Start printing playoff tickets!

While I’m certainly realistic enough to realize that it is extremely unlikely that the O’s will make the playoffs this year, I think they’ll be a lot better. Maybe a strong third, and definitely over .500.

That’s pretty optimistic. I’m not quite ready to go that far yet, especially given the overall strength of the division.

I’d love it to happen, though; i’ve lived in the US for almost 11 years, and i’ve never seen the Birds have a winning season.

I’m lucky enough to have been an Orioles fan since 1971. I’ve had some good years as a fan, just not lately.

Giants lose 3 out of 4, continue their shoddy defensive play. Cody Ross needs to get healthy fast because Huff is lost in right field. I’m not looking forward to seeing Kershaw or Billingsley again this year.

The odd thing is that because of yesterday’s anomaly, you guys outscored us 19-13 for the series, but only won the one game.

Meanwhile, it was sad to see that Mayor Villaraigosa had to record a PSA (with Giants and Dodgers fans with him) reminding people to root for their teams with civility. I hate the Giants as a team as much as any Dodger fan, but enjoy chatting with Giants fans as much as anybody. I really don’t get the drunken violence.

I like this new Mariners’ commercial this year. It shows a man about to get his chest waxed and the waxer warns him it’s going to hurt. The man replies with something along the lines of “I know about pain. I’m a Mariners fan.” Then the GM appears and admits the team sucks, but they’re working on getting better. The waxer agrees and says she thinks the GM knows what he’s doing. It reminds me of the current Dominos pizza ad campaign.

Looks like the Reds are on track, sweeping many pundit’s NL Central darling the Brewers. If Travis Wood is available in your fantasy leagues, pick him up. Kid’s a rising star.
