MLB: April 2015

They’re pellets, not powderized dust. About the size of grains of rice.

As fake turf goes, it is about the best out there. Still sucks though. The rubber pellets will settle in after a while and not be quite so obvious. But they will always be there

Don’t know that breathing them in is really a problem, but they can fly up and get in your eyes. Diving for a fly ball or grounder would get your face close enough to the carpet to get the pellets in your eyes or in your mouth.

Cubs call up Addison Russell. Certainly makes watching April baseball even more interesting with both top prospects playing

I hope the Cubs can stay relevant this year. Bryant had a nice day yesterday and Jake Arrieta looked again, too. The Pirates were the sexy pick in the NL Central, but I never did like their pitching this year.

Blink and you’ll probably miss it, but the Houston Astros are in 1st place.

I believe Toronto and Tampa Bay have the only artificial turfs in MLB and that they are both Field Turf, correct?

A-Rod has hit much better than I thought he would, I would think a year away from the game would be too much to overcome. But he can’t play 1B, he does not look comfortable out there and he seems to have trouble with the footwork. Could be a problem for trips to NL cities- or we suck it up and put him at 3rd for those games and let Headley sit.

Wow, you’re right, Toronto and Tampa are the only stadiums without real grass. Surprising considering football is going the other direction. Granted, football results in much more damage to grass, but it’s not like they play every day.

It’s amazing how awkward ARod is at 1st base. It’s not *that *difficult to master and he’s an athletic dude. Not only his footwork, but his inability to handle throws is surprising.

He can be a pinch hitter in nl parks, unless Headley or Teixeira is hurt. It used to serve the Yanks well to have a veteran on the bench, like Strawberry, Raines, Chili Davis and Cecil Fielder. Plus Girardi can use that as a way to rest the old cheating motherfucker.

Well, until 2018, at which point the stadium will be substantially renovated, including real grass. The cost to the taxpayers is not yet determined but $300 million would be a low end estimate.

Toronto at least has a roof you can open, so grass is an option, albeit a very expensive one. Tampa Bay needs a new home.

Well, you still have to have some awareness of how the ball bounces on that side of the diamond or getting hard throws from the other side of the infield. Remember his entire career, he’s been at SS or 3B.

According to baseball-reference.com, he’s NEVER played 1B before this season (though interestingly enough in the 1 1B game they’ve rated, A-Rod was 1 run above average defensively)

A suspension and fines have been handed out for the Royals-A’s fiasco over the weekend. Link.

Head-Hunter Herrera is set to receive five days. No punishment was handed out to anyone on the Athletics.

So…the Dodgers are in San Francisco tonight, with Tim Lincecum on the mound for the Giants. That means I need to get my trash-talking out of the way now, before the game starts. With that in mind, I present this interesting baseball tidbit.

The Los Angeles Dodgers last won the National League Pennant in 1988. The list of NL West teams that have won the Pennant since that year:

Arizona Diamondbacks
Colorado Rockies
San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants
Atlanta Braves
Cincinnati Reds

So that’s “all of them, plus two”.

The period belongs on the inside of the quotation mark…typical Giants fan.

Oh, now there’s something we can *really *disagree on.

I’ll bet you hate the Oxford comma, too.

I found this video rather amusing:

When Giants Fan Met Dodgers Fan

I wonder if he ever played 1B at any level. Not surprising he never made an appearance at 1B in MLB. You see guys make the switch from catcher to 1B pretty frequently and usually look pretty good (Mike Napoli, Victor Martinez, Carlos Santana, Scott Hatteberg, others). Can’t think of as many guys who moved from 3B to 1B. George Brett, Miguel Cabrera. Did Matt Williams move to 1B? Anyway, I would hope ARod would improve with a little practice.

Best gift I’ve ever gotten from a Giants fan. Thanks for this. I’ll be sharing with friends on both sides of the aisle.

Damn, funny and SLO is totally the giants dodgers dividing line.

The Reds and Brewers demonstrated the quality of their pitching staffs last night by tying the record for most grand slams in a game. 2 by the Reds and 1 by the Brewers.

As a Mets fan I don’t usually chime in on this and related threads because my nuts ache too much, but I will cautiously venture this neutrally optimistic quote from Groundhog Day:

Whatever happens tomorrow, or for the rest of my life: I’m happy now…

Hoping I’ll be able to say at season’s end that “Today… Is tomorrow!” after a long, cold winter of discontent

+1

Seriously this is a fun team to follow right now. Just hope D’Arnaud can come back soon (though his replacement ain’t doing all that bad).
