MLB: August 2012

Nats just lost their 5th straight. Ouch. Strasburg got rocked for 7 runs in 5 innings. Double ouch.

Maybe the Padres will continue their winning streak. Go Padres.

Done and done! Johnny Cueto gets his MLB-leading 17th win. If he continues to pitch like he is, he will get 20 wins no problem and should easily be the favorite for the NL Cy Young. And how come nobody is talking about Todd Frazier for rookie of the year?

No such luck, I’m (not at all) sorry to say. Kris Medlen has now pitched 28.1 shutout innings in a row, with a 0.50 ERA for the month of August. NL Pitcher of the Month, perhaps?

Yeah, that game was hard to watch.

Tom Scud:

Why are the 2003 Tigers your benchmark, rather than the 1962 Mets? Making special allowance for an expansion team?

The 62 Mets are now 50 years ago; there’s almost as much time between now and then as there is between the Mets and the Cleveland Spiders. Also, the Astros might still conceivably play poorly enough to miss the Tigers’ win total (or exceed the Mets’ loss total, I suppose - I think they need 3 wins to avoid that), but I don’t really see them going 0-for-the-season, so there’s not much drama in that.

A graphic representation of just how bad the Astros are:

A lot of long red bars, and precious few green ones of any height. Since July 1 they’ve won 2 games in a row once…and both were 1-run games.

Do you know what Love is?

Love is your wife texting you the score of the Dodgers-Rockies game at work when you can’t watch without you having to ask.

Go Blue!

Anyone think that Johnny Cueto and Aroldis Chapman may end up sharing the Cy Young award? Has it ever happened? I know it can happen, but has it? How often do two players from the same team warrant consideration? I’m thinking maybe the (2001?) D-backs when both Johnson and Shilling were there.

Look at Aroldis Chapman’s stats. They are fucking amazing.

Upon viewing the list, it looks like its never happened. Interestingly, Cincinnati has never had a Cy Young winner, which is surprising.

I am blesssed to be able to listen at work. Blanton is pitching quite well. We desperately need this one before coming home against AZ.

Well, not too surprising. Cincinnati has never really been known for pitching stars.

Johnny Van Der Meer, Ewell Blackwell, Jim Maloney and Noodles Hahn would like a word with you!

I had to look all those old guys up…interestingly, Van Der Meer is the only pitcher in MLB history to pitch back-to-back no hitters.

There’s no way a true contender should lose 2 of 3 to the depleted Jays this late in the season. Particularly with their ace on the mound. Sheesh.

Did you really not know that? Not being snarky, but that’s the single most impressive feat in baseball history in my opinion. To beat that you’d need to pitch 3 no-hitters in a row!

He may have been past his prime, but you also had a guy named Seaver who wasn’t a bad pitcher…

Yeah, it’s a list that doesn’t really stand up well to names like Sandy Koufax, Warren Spahn, Nolan Ryan, and Roger Clemens.

Although Tom Seaver and Christy Mathewson both pitched for the Reds.

The Giants have 33 games remaining on their schedule. Only 6 of those games are against teams with a winning record; those 6 teams are all the Dodgers.

Meanwhile, after today the Dodgers get:

6 games against the Giants - three in each park
3 games vs the Reds in Cincinnati
3 games vs the Nationals in Washington
4 games vs the Cardinals in LA

along with 6 each against the Padres and Diamondbacks, and 3 vs Colorado.

That’s 16 of their remaining 31 games against teams with a better record than them.
The scheduling gods seem to favor San Francisco this year…

I’ve only been a fan of baseball since the mid-1990’s when I moved to Cincinnati and I saw how crazy people are here for their Reds (and college hoops, too), so my knowledge of the game is somewhat limited. So no, I did not know that.

Well, it’s a cool thing to learn. The Reds have some great history, even before the Big Red Machine.

Jose Rijo, Tom Browning, Pedro Borbon, David Wells and the Nasty Boys were all pretty good too.
