MLB: August

Ulf I edited in a link to TPM that I reckon covers the Cubs ownership not allowing “seasonal” employees to work more than 30 hours per week, else they have to get health coverage (“ObamaCare”)

Ground crews hours cut to avoid paying health care benefits.

Ah. That makes more sense. Thanks for the link.
Still wouldn’t say the team should have to forfeit because the owner is a jerk.

He wasn’t by any means the first and unfortunately he won’t be the last.

Eta: this was addressed to the first response above, not the second. Which I haven’t read yet.

The Cubs should not have forfeited because the owner is a jerk.

They should have forfeited because they failed to provide adequate resources to host a Major League Baseball game, which includes the ability to, in the professional manner expected, protect the field from a temporary rain delay.

It’s the responsibility of the home team to provide a playing field suitable for a Major League game, at the time the game is scheduled. If they can’t, they should forfeit.

Holy crap, I’m glad I didn’t turn off the radio when the Mariners went into the 9th inning down 3-0 vs. Boston. They erupted and scored 5 in the top of the inning.

Aaaand, they hold on to that lead in the bottom of the 9th, with Fernando Rodney earning his 37th save of the season.

I had a few minutes to kill last evening and tuned into the TV broadcast during the 9th inning expecting to see the Mariners go down quietly in the 9th. After all, the Sox bested Felix and limited the M’s to only a few hits during the previous 8 innings. Needless to say, I was certainly pleasantly surprised.

On a related note, the Red Sox had the best pitcher in MLB beat and the M’s down to their last out in the 9th and still managed to lose. And these are the reigning World Series champs! I’m not even a Red Sox fan and I’d like to know what the fuck happened to them this year. Did the Devil show up to collect?

Did the Mariners pick up Kershaw this week? I didn’t see it in the papers…

What happened here is that Uehara is 40. When a pitcher that age loses it, it happens fast.

Hmm, while I’m sure Ricketts hates the affordable care act, companies have always tried to cut hours of hourly employees. The mandate isn’t in effect this year anyway.

The forecast for this week in Chicago has been hot and very humid with a chance of storms every single day.

After 17 years without an upheld protest, it appears almost certain there will be a second one in the space of a week. The Rays are protesting a call in which the umpires allowed a replay and reversed a call, after both the pitcher and the batter were on the rubber and in the batters box, in position and ready for the next pitch.

I believe this would be the fist time since the 1930s that a game that continued would be wiped out and replayed.

Wow. Dark clouds in Chicago and a huge group ran the tarp onto the field. Makes sense , the orioles don’t come back to Chicago and they don’t want a Sunday doubleheader , would have to be a traditional double header and that would screw up ticket sales

I was going to say the “Pine Tar Game” in 1983 had the end of the game wiped out and replayed. But it turns out the out called on Brett was the third out in the top of the ninth so it ended the game. They did replay from that point, but nothing was wiped out except the incorrect out call on Brett.

Detroit gives up 20 runs to Minnesota last night and 12 to them tonight. Welcome to the curse of Jim Johnson (though he didn’t pitch tonight).

I doubt this protest will be upheld. The ump stated the manager was headed out of the dugout as the batter stepped into the box, and the rules say the umpire decides if the replay request is timely.

I dont mind it put the Royals up by three games in their division

Something you don’t see very often: a 5-4-3-2 triple play.

(mets completed it today against the Dodgers–somebody, cough cough, decided it made sense to try to score from second on a double play ball with his team down by five runs)

Kind of sorry Puig didn’t get into a brief rundown to be tagged out by the pitcher so the play could’ve gone 5-4-3-2-1. Oh well.

Just got back from the Nats v Giants. It didn’t start we’ll for DC, Stras gave up five before the Nats got their first hit, Nats ended up winning 14-6. I was surprised how many SF fans were in DC, they quieted down in the 6th

I’ll bet they did!

12 of the last 13.

They need some of what they had yesterday tonight. A. J. Burnett could be looking at a career high in strikeouts if his pitch count weren’t so high.
