I mentioned in the Mitchell Report Death pool that I’ll be disappointed if we learn that Mike Piazza is named in the Mitchell report, but I’m kind of resigned to the fact that he probably did some kind of juicing. It kind of saddens me, but I’ll live. That being said, If I find out that Jose Reyes or David Wright are named, that will really upset me. I know some Yankee fans refuse to even admit the possibility of Jeter or Mariano, and they would be heartbreakers too.
How about you? Is there anyone that will just strike a blow to your faith in humanity and tear your heart to shreds? Do you even care one way or the other at this point? How has the steroid era jaded you regarding your team’s players?
I’ll be upset if Greg Maddux is mentioned - I think it’s unlikely as all hell, but I’ll still be upset. Ditto any Braves players in the mid-90s (while they were Braves - Braves players turned Yankees (I’m lookin’ at you, Gary Sheffield) don’t count. ).
As far as the reverse of this question, “Who, in being named, will make you experience some Schadenfreude?”, my pick goes to Cal Ripken Jr. I was so sick of the constant fawning of the man in the mid-late nineties. I take my kid to school as well, but you don’t see newspaper articles written about me being a “normal guy”.
Jeter and Rivera, Bernie Williams, Tino Martinez, Paul O’Neill, Alex Rodriguez I guess, and John Smoltz. There are sources already saying Roger Clemens is in there, which I hoped wasn’t the case, but it’s hard to be stunned about if it’s true.
I don’t think I would be heart broken by anyone but I would be a little disappointed to find out that Torii Hunter or Johan Santanna were on the list. Or David Ortiz.
I don’t expect that any names are going to be a shock, though. I suspect it will only include the names that everybody already knows about – Bonds, McGuire, Sosa, Giambi, Sheffield, Canseco – names like that.
I would hate to see Edgar Martinez on the list, he was quite possibly the greatest DH to ever play the game, and to have him associated with steroids would be tough for this Mariners fan.
Otherwise I agree with Dio, I think we will see the usual suspects, with some surprises, like Schilling or Ortiz. I understand Clemons name has already been leaked as being in the report. No surprise there, at all.
And along with the OP, I really hope Tony Gwynn isn’t in there. That would truly suck.
Ty Cobb was already a helluva player but a racist asshole and a bully, so I guess it won’t do his rep too much damage if he’s named. I could live with that.
Derek Jeter would be pretty awful. Ditto Bernie Williams, who I always loved ever since I got his foul ball signed when he played for the Columbus Clippers.
As for teams I don’t root for…well, Cal Ripken is a good mention–he’s always seemed pure class. Ditto Jim Thome–I always had a bit of a crush on him.
A better question is…who do you WANT to see in the report? I would laugh and laugh to see that pompous ass Curt Schilling’s name in there.
Oh yeah? I don’t just hope, I KNOW that Casey Stengel will be at the top of the list in the Mitchell Report. Those pin stripes disguised a body that presaged The Hulk.
And then there’s King Kong Keller. You think he got that name by eatin’ JuJubes?
Jeter, Andy Pettitte and Rivera are foremost. Bernie, Tino, Paulie and Jorge would be terrible. Cone & Al Leiter would surprise and disappoint me. A-Rod would surprise me, but not crush me. Cano would be very disappointing among the younger players.
Clemens would be disappointing but not surprising, I still don’t consider him a Yankee. Boomer would be a big surprise and I do consider him a Yankee for life.
Strawberry I would not bat an eye at.
Nolan Ryan being up on that list would break my heart.
When I was playing at the YMCA, I had a VHS about the Ryan Express and his records. And I thought he was way cool and, had I known who Chuck Norris was at the time, I would have bet he could take out Norris with a fastball.
