David Justice was my favorite player years ago. I guess I’m glad his accomplishments with Atlanta aren’t visibly tainted, but at this point I’m just sad about what this means baseball has become.
You really thought Ryan McGuire was going to be named? The guy hit seven homers in his entire career.
None of the names surprised me or broke my heart. The question is whether MLB will (too late, but better late than never) do what needs to be done.
Yeah, now I’m really depressed.
At least the receipts/shipping labels they have related to Kevin Brown and Matt Herges were during a time when they weren’t with the Dodgers anymore. Jesus.
Martin, yeah, I’m seeing what you’re talking about just now. Fair points. Also, I was pleased (and surprised) to see Mitchell more or less call for amnesty. Given all that, I’ll obviously have to temper my criticism of the report.
I still don’t think any good will come of this, however. It’s still going to encourage everyone to take part in a few more rounds of “everyone point at the bad guy.”
Ceil and Prince Fielder would be a surprise.
Thank heavens Nolan Ryan wasn’t on the list. I rooted for him for years.
So I guess the question is, where did that leaked list come from?
With a few minor surprises, the names included in the official report weren’t Earth-shattering, but the names on the leaked list are depressing.
Could this be a case of “where there’s smoke, there’s fire?”
I don’t think these guys would risk everything if it didn’t work.
The leaked list has no validity. Until someone comes up with some proof that it has some standing I’m going to ignore the fact that it ever existed.
Wait, you’re asking for proof? Other than some canceled checks, hearsay, and a couple FedEx labels, the Mitchell report has nothing.
I’m just asking about the list released before the report became public – it was released by a major media outlet, who I trust considered the source to be reliable. Even Mitchell himself said his report wasn’t even close to naming all of those who used – Caminiti said almost 1/2 of the players used and Canseco said something similar.
Major Media outfits continue to embarrass themselves in the digital age. It was a good inside source that set them up as suckers. No smoke and no fires.
Check my post from just after **DtC ** posted it. False leaks have been dropping for months. The WNBC list looked like a joke with so many big names on it. By the way, that was strictly the local (NYC) NBC I believe and not even the National.
Jim
Do you think those named in the Mitchell report include every marquis baseball player who’s used?
The real list is long, I assure you… and sadly, I think it’s more in-line with the leaked list.
Mitchell is sure he only got a portion of the all the players. But that “Leaked” list was pulled out of someone’s ass is all I am saying.
It is of no more value that the thread started yesterday with the MLB steroids deathpool (and no less).
Jim
Bingo. Steroids aren’t just about power or size- they are also about coming back more quickly from an injury. That’s why pitchers use them.
It’s a long season with a lot of games in a row and few days off, and there are always young guys itching to take your spot. The pressure on players is enormous, and it is only natural that they will actively seek any edge they can get.
I am not saddened or surprised by any of this- nor should any true baseball fan. You all knew it, just like you know about the greenies…
I’m not saying it’s good for the game, but it is part of the game.
They trusted it, but in the end that means they felt they couldn’t find a better source without losing their scoop. This is one of those situations where a news outlet stands behind its source and pretty much says ‘we stand by the process the information came from,’ de-emphasizing the fact that the information was wrong, which is the important thing.
Varitek will break my heart.
Bonds and Clemens just announced they did not take them. Take your list and draw a black line through their names.
Note how some guys just got a chance to lengthen their careers. Guys that were not quite good enough were able to get several years.
This is not all of the users at all. A complete list would include most the players.
Nah, you’re looking at too big of a picture. Say you’re a good player and have tons of talent and steroids COULD make you better and earn you 10 more million dollars a year.
Say you’re a player that’s barely in the majors. If you’re out, you’re selling insurance. How’s that for motive?
All that matters is they think it works. Corked bats don’t work but players still try to use them.
