MLB: Good/bad trades/pick-ups so far this season

As I was watching the Giants game, it occurred to me that David Bell for Desi Relaford is lookin’ pretty good for the Giants so far. (I know - Estes / Shinjo were involved as well, but not in the trade to Seattle).

So, what are shaping up as some of the best trades / pickups this season so far? I’m looking for trades / pickups that happened before the season or early in the season, not recent acquisitions.

Along those lines, Sheffield looks pretty good for the Braves, Tino doesn’t for the Cards, Izzy does, etc.

What are your favorites? Can we vote on an absolute best? And an absolute worst? (I’m looking at you, Ryan Dempster)

That Sheffield deal is looking miiiiiiiighty good for the Braves. Damn them.

In contrast, I don’t think Alomar and Vaughn are doing all that swimmingly for the Mets.

I think we can add “Shawn Estes to the Reds” to this thread in another few months…

Speaking of Estes, I’d say the Giants improved by getting rid of him.

I’d say they improved through taking innings away from him. I’m not a big Shinjo fan.

I’m starting to think Steve Phillips and Scott Layden are the same person. Nuff said

The best trade of the year: Billy Koch to the A’s, for Eric Hinske to the Blue Jays. A trade that provided a huge help to BOTH teams. The A’s got a relief ace they needed in return for a third baseman they didnt need. The Blue Jays got a third baseman and a hitter they desperately needed for a relief ace they didn’t.

The Cubs pick up of Antonio Alfonseca pretty much blows some serious chunks at this point.

Sheffield has been a very good trade, but their success is as reliant on an astonishing bullpen performance by a whole lot of guys that are having outstanding seasons.

For the Cardinals, Izzy has worked out well, Tino just hasn’t done what we hoped for, Finley has helped (it may be to much to ask to step into Darryl Kile’s shoes), Rolen is finally begining to roll (we’ll get even for the Carlton-Wise trade eventually).

I guess I was focusing on the Alfonseca specific portion. Heck, I really like the Matt Clement portion of the deal. He’s had a heck of a year and I think can give us a solid 3rd or 4th starter to pair with Wood, Prior, etc giving the Cubs one of the best rotations in baseball.

Now if they could just hit consistently and get a little luckier in 1 run games.

I nominate the Red Sox picking up Tony Clark as the worst of the season. ::snicker::

The Mariners recently picked up Jose Offerman after he was released by the Red Sox. I know the M’s needed to beef up their bench due to an amazing string of farm-system injuries, but – Offerman? Even with Boston picking up almost all of this year’s remaining salary, is he really the best they could do? I fear a major turkey in the making.
