It’s becoming clear that being the General Manager of the New York Yankees is the least desirable job in baseball. Brian Cashman has been completely incapable of keeping his foot out of his mouth this entire off-season, saying some form of nonsense seemingly every single day. He won’t be fired because he’s bulletproof - no one else is going to take that job unless their piece of the pie is incomprehensibly big.
I know, he actually told the truth about Stanton. Inconceivable.
Teams have until Friday to fill up their 40 man roster ahead of the Rule 5 draft. There may be some trades and movement before then to free up space.
John Mozeliak of the Cardinals has fallen into the same trap. Before the season was even over he stated numerous times that the team would need to find “three starting pitchers.” After the World Series ended and free agent season actually started, he subtly changed his answer to “at least two starting pitchers.” Even the St. Louis media, which over the years has been friendly to ownership, is calling him out on it.
The Cardinals management is also catching a lot of of flak for not yet having, or even scheduling, their traditional postseason meeting with the sports media.
Cashman bad-mouthing his own player now looks doubly stupid considering Stanton shares an agent with Yamamoto. 4D chess right there, Brian.
The point isn’t whether Cashman’s assessment was right or wrong, it’s the sharing of his big brain thoughts with the media that’s idiotic. He needs to be gone a decade ago.
Not only was it right, it’s so obviously right that there is no argument. He shared nothing that wasn’t glaringly obvious. Stanton had a -0.8 WAR and hit .191 last season. He was a drain on the team. If he or his agent want to respond they should address how they will change that. Let’s justify how your client should get paid $92 million with a negative WAR. I’m sure that will help your other clients.
Sure, if you think losing the clubhouse is brilliant management.
Cashman’s days are numbered. I’m surprised the little weasel survived his own sordid little scandals. Ah, but those nepo babies do have staying power.
Exactly. Cashman said the quiet part out loud, and showed himself to be both a moron and a bad businessman. Being “right” doesn’t matter - being a dick does.
Personally, I hate the Yankees, and love to see the place burn. He’s managed to piss off the clubhouse with the Stanton comment, his scouting/development departments with his analytics comments last week, and it all likely pisses off the rest of the front office for being so glaringly dumb.
You can pretend it’s the quiet part. It’s very very loud. The clubhouse is full of adult professionals who also know the loud part and are not happy about it.
In other news the owners are expected to approve the move of the A’s to Las Vegas this week.
Cite? I assume you’re basing this on something more than I figure it’s like this.Stanton isn’t Pavano.
I need a cite to prove that the other players know he has a negative WAR? Lots of players didn’t play up to their potential this year. Stanton was an anchor weighing down the team. There was no upside. He can’t field anymore. He can’t run without getting injured. He’s hitting .191. His contract is holding back a chance for the team to make some big moves. Cashman didn’t say anything that hasn’t been said every day. I’m not sure what you think the quiet part was.
Stanton sucked this season, but he was decent in '22, and quite good in '21. I’ve never heard anything about him being unpopular with the other players, so I wondered if you had read it somewhere.
Cashman has been all kinds of weird since the season ended. What is he trying to accomplish by denigrating Stanton to the press? It’s entirely possible that Stanton stays healthy next season. Is the team addressing that in anyway? Different offseason regimen? He doesn’t have to get hurt again. Is he trying to get him to waive his no-trade clause? I have a hard time believing any other team even wants Stanton, unless the Yankees are paying his salary. And what’s the point of that?
I’ve been deeply unimpressed with Cashman for a long time. YMMV.
The Brewers, having lost manager Craig Counsell to the Cubs, have promoted bench coach Pat Murphy to become their manager for 2024. It’s Murphy’s second shot at managing in MLB (he was interim manager for the Padres in 2015 after Bud Black was fired), though he had a long run as a successful head coach in the college ranks, for Notre Dame and Arizona State.
Also, he’ll turn 65 in a couple of weeks, making him on the older side for someone getting their first non-interim managerial job.
The team also announced that former Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks was named the team’s “associate manager.”
Athletic columnist and freelance baseball writer Joe Sheehan had a piece in his newsletter yesterday that has been the talk of baseball Twitter, comparing the wildly disparate legacies of As owner John Fisher and recently-deceased Padres owner Peter Seidler. He put the piece up for free today, and it’s well worth a look:
I agree that is a good article.
I feel for the Oakland fans. I grew up with a Brooklyn Dodger fan. My father grew up living baseball from dawn till dusk. His life reminded me of the movie The Sandlot only set in the 1930s. The Dodgers leaving Brooklyn broke his heart. He would watch the occasional game and brought us to some games but his heart was never really in it again. Before his death he started enjoying the Mets but it wasn’t the same.
I visited Las Vegas beginning of October. I hadn’t been paying attention and didn’t know there was going to be a vote. It hadn’t dawned on me what a moneymaker it was to have big league teams in Las Vegas. I was going to eat in New York New York. There was a preseason hockey game happening. The casino was packed with fans. I know if it was the regular season I would try to go to a hockey game. If I was there during baseball season I would go to a game. I think a lot of vistors are going to think the same thing. It may be a small TV market but if they don’t screw it up there will be a lot of people in the stadium.
possible changes to the pitch clock coming
That article is over a year old - they implemented them.
thats why they like putting teams in tourist type of places…people will go even if they re not big fans of sports or the teams they’ll go because its part of the “experience” Also it will be something to do once you’ve done everything else 5 times
tho I wonder if they realize its gonna be 90-110 degrees for just about all of the season …that gonna be a big change for anyone used to bay area weather
see msn gives you these articles as if they’re new …
Players are pretty aware of stuff like this now. When Daulton Varsho didn’t win a Gold Glove, one of his teammates - I think it was Chris Bassitt - freaked out on social media about the fact Varsho led the majors in DRS, an even more obscure sabermetric figure.
Bear in mind,
- The average MLB player is half the age of the average SDMB poster. Newfangled stats are normal to them, and
- They’re judged more and more by newfangled stats, so they matter to them.
I think, in general, Stanton’s teammates are aware he was a very bad player. That doesn’t mean they don’t like him, or might feel Cashman acted inappropriately.
Looking at the plans it’s going to be a retractable roof. Since rain isn’t too much of a concern I’m assuming it will be closed when it’s too hot. Looks like they are planning on knocking down the Tropicana and putting it there.
