Yanks appear to be close to grabbing Lance Berkman as mainly a DH, I’m not sure it makes sense. $5.5 million or so left this year and has a $2m buyout for next year.
He doesn’t hit lefties anymore and overall is not hitting all that well. Seems like an odd move.
Probably just a thing. Guzman isn’t particularly horrible, and can be a decent enough 8th hitter. He hits in bunches, defense is adequate.
Yeah, it’d be a bit odd. It may just be the Yankees flexing their “I see you want this - so I’ll go ahead and keep it away from you” muscles. The White Sox would probably be improved with him, so it’s playoff insurance.
Joey Votto could theoretically go deep 6 times in the next game and half…
But yeah-you know those crazy long odds that someone fills out a NCAA tournament bracket exactly right? Those are the exact same odds that someone predicted Bautista would have at least 31 dingers on 8/1.
In other news, could someone please get Jason Heyward a copy of Ted Williams’ The Science of Hitting, because he seriously needs to learn an uppercut.
Can someone explain to me why the Dodgers might want Theriot over DeWitt? I understand why they are looking to take on Lilly as a pitcher, but Theriot has a negative WAR, he will actively make the team worse just by being there. Is that the penalty the Dodgers are going to have to pay to get a mediocre 5th starter, take on one of the players the Cubs want gone as well as lose a better 2nd baseman? We aren’t actually looking forward to playing him right? Gah!
I know, it’s just a rumor, I’m sure nothing will come of it.
I did like Pod in last night’s giants game though. He isn’t a huge improvement to the team, but he is an improvement, particularly if we do end up sending Manny to the White Sox.
It says something when a 385 foot dinger is one of the 3 or 4 softest hit balls of a rally. And the vid is priceless-by the end the Cubs are in full little league WTF mode and Lou Piniella is looking on like the cigar store indian that he is.
Well, the Padres just got Ryan Ludwick, whose offense (.281/.343/.484) will actually be some help. The Padres’ outfield has OPSed about .700 this year, so Ludwick’s .827 (which is right around his career average) should be a real boost.
If the Cubs had any spirit left, the Rockies have crushed it into the dirt with their cleats. Ater tying the game with a three run homer in the eighth, the game went to the bottom of the ninth tied 5-5. Carlos Gonzales, who had a single double, and triple plus an RBI sac fly already took the first pitch of the ninth into the upper deck to complete the cycle and give the Rockies a walk-off win.
Go Padres! Glad to see at least my alternate team is doing well and making good trades. Just bought tickets for a game against Colorado in September. It will either be a crucial match-up, or totally meaningless.
