MLB: July 2010

Strange day. The Tigers scored 5 in the first and gave up 6 in the second. Then they got ahead 8 to 6, finally winning 12 to 7. It was a weird day.

Looks like the Orioles want Buck Showalter as their next manager.

Listening to the Indians/Rangers game, in Texas. A fan just fell from the second deck trying to catch a foul ball…

The fan was carried out on a stretcher, responsive and moving all limbs. So that’s good.

Here’s a story from ESPN

I was watching the game live, but had my head down when it happened. The scream from the fans is what got my attention. It was…not a normal scream. It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it.

So glad to hear it looks like he’s going to be OK. Talk about sobering. It’s always nice to see baseball players realizing that there are more important things in life than baseball, but I wish it hadn’t been for that reason.

I was at a Yankees-Red Sox game once at Yankee Stadium when a fan fell out of the second deck and landed on top of the wire netting behind home plate. He lay there apparently unconscious for several minutes before getting up and scrambling back into the stands.

Something always happened at a Sox game at the Stadium…

Oh yeah, then we went on to lose 12-1, giving up 4 homers.

We did play some smashy-ball yesterday, with 4 homers of our own. Two by Jayson Nix.

Oh and not only are Cabrera and Sizemore hurt, now Choo is hurt. And so is LaPorta. That’s our 1-2-3 spots in the lineup if anyone is counting, and a guy who has been killing the ball since he got back from AAA.

The Indians is bad hoo-doo.

Our radio announcer, who is a religious man, was practically holding church service after the fan fell. He was seriously seriously shaken up (as anyone would be) and saying we really shouldn’t be playing baseball, we should be at church.

I’m sort of surprised Nolan Ryan let the game go on (he’s a really religious guy isn’t he?) But I bet he called Selig who him to play ball, dammit.

These west coast games are a killer but the Yanks have won 4 straight now and A-Rod tied Manny for 2nd most Grand Slams yesterday to power CC Sabathia to his 11th win and 7th straight.

One very good thing for the Yanks and their fans, no more west coast games after the All Star Break. I don’t remember that ever happening before. We still go to Texas twice I think but that is only 1 hour off.

The Yanks oddly have 9 Grand Slams already. This is a pace to set the record I believe. The Yankee record is only 10 IIRC.

The Yanks are playing very well right now.

There is a difference?

Good move. The guy does nothing but win. Well, drive everyone around him crazy and win.

He is great at getting teams ready to win. Seems like by the time he has them ready though he burns out his welcome.

Jeebus! WTF was that last night?

  1. Cardinals have a six-run lead over the Rockies going into the 9th inning.
  2. ???
  3. Rockies 12, Cardinals 9.

Almost nobody has a reliable bullpen anymore, is why.

As an Orioles fan, i hope you’re right, but it’s my feeling that the team’s problems run too deep to be fixed by simply changing the manager.

That was called “Coors Field.” The game isn’t over there until you are on your third beer at home later.

If that’s true (and I’m not sure if it is now compared to any other time in the recent baseball era), how has that happened?

The advent of the mystique of the closer, maybe? Talented pitchers in the minors become either starters or closers, not setup men. And there aren’t enough to go around, more so since expansion, of course.

As a Braves fan from their first game here in Atlanta, I am quite pleased with how well they have done this year. If we can win against Philly tonight our record will be 50-39 and it isn’t even the All Star break yet.
I really like the fact that the schedule has us playing the last three games before the break with the NY Mets. If we can win that series (and I think we can) then I feel very confident in our chances for a postseason berth.

I just voted for Wagner in the final All Star balloting. That is a very easy to use website. Nice design.

I believe that Atlanta has one of the best bullpens in MLB.
What do y’all think?

Boston had that schedule last year. It did seem to help.

Maybe. When I posed you the question I framed it within the modern baseball era, which to me meant having closers. I suppose being a setup guy isn’t what a dreamy-eyed minor leaguer necessarily sets out to be either. I guess like you say middle relief is a consolation prize job…you aren’t good enough or have enough stamina to be a starter, don’t have good enough stuff or the right mentality to be a closer…

…that said, I am grateful as a Reds fan for Arthur Rhodes, the Renaissance Man.
