MLB: July 2010

It is as if the Yankees said No Miami, You will not take our title as most hated team in sports!

Man, the Phillies fucked up with Lee.

Yeah. I wouldn’t have minded the Phillies trading Lee and then using the prospects to send to the Blue Jays - kind of making it a Lee for Halliday deal. And, I wouldn’t have minded the Phillies waiting a while and finding the best deal with Lee. But, if you compare the prospects the Phils got with what the Mariners are getting from the Yankees it really doesn’t seem like they did a great job. Hindsight is 50/50, of course. And, realizing that there is no way the Phillies could have traded him at this point in the season without the team rebelling. Still, it seems like they could have gotten a little bit more.

Half a season to go. Phils offense is hopefully going to pick up and start providing some wins for Halladay so we don’t have to miss Cliff Lee quite so much.

It will be a scary rotation and in crunching numbers, I believe it indicates the Yanks have no intention of lowering their payroll next year but rather increasing it a lot. I figure Lee will command a contract of $20 million +. Vasquez salary is going away but will be replaced by built in pay raises for Cano, Swisher and Granderson and the Arbitration increases for Joba and Hughes.

Pettitte is likely to pitch at least one more year but not at a lower salary and Rivera is unlikely to give a discount though both will probably stay the same. The only salary relief possibility is I doubt Jeter will get $22 million per on his next contract. But it won’t pay of Lee’s contract.

The following year Posada’s $15m does either go away or reduce and A-Rod’s salary starts declining. But of course Joba and Hughes will keep increasing. We might as well pencil the Yanks in as a $220 million payroll.

Fair enough.

They really did, I never understood why they were in such a hurry to move him. They had the cash and the prospect would have still come if they decide to move him now or what a way to go for the Ring again.

A bunch of reports over the last hour suggesting that the Yankees/Mariners deal for Lee is dead.

And now this:

If this is true, all it means is that Texas has a better shot this year, and the Yankees wait until the off-season to throw wads more money at Lee.

Confirmed: Lee to the Rangers for 4 players.

They need to make it to the series again so they can get beat again.

SO SAYETH ME!

Going into tonight’s game at the SkyDome Presented By Rogers, the Blue Jays are 43-43. If they somehow manage at the end of the season to finish 80-82 (the cruelest record in baseball, IMO), Cito Gaston’s second tour of duty as Jay skipper will end with a record of 206-206. And if this becomes the case, he will be the third successive Blue Jay manager to finish his tenure with a record of exactly .500, following Carlos Tosca’s 191-191, and John Gibbons’ 305-305.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

First they get Josh Hamilton from us, now they steal Cliff Lee!

Bastards!!!

Cool result and probably better for baseball. As a small consolation prize I would not expect Lee to start tonight at least.

Also I hope Blue Jays sweep coming up.

Whew. I had been hearing Lee to the Twins rumors, and just as the Royals were showing signs of life.

First sweep in Seattle since 1995! Granted, we can thank a foolish Mariner fan for preserving the middle game for us, but we’ll take what we’re given. Go Royals!!

I see what you did there.:smiley:

Wohoo! Let’s Go O’s!

Baltimore rallies to beat the Rangers in 10 innings, after a game-tying Grand slam in the top of the ninth by—wait for it—Corey Patterson.

What’s even more amazing is that Patterson, a guy with a career OPS of .695, was playing DH. How little power does your team have when Corey Patterson is DHing?

And another idiot, sitting in almost the same place, did exactly the same thing tonight

Dave Niehaus: “And that fan will be escorted out of the ballpark…”

Ah Phillies, you’re killing me!

Now we have to beat Halladay and Hamels just to split the series!

:frowning:

Reds’ starter Travis Wood is perfect through 7 innings.

Halladay is pitching a 3-hit shutout in the same game. Pretty amazing stuff.

I feel sorry for the kid, but what a great game.

Chris Tillman pitching a no-hitter through 5 for Baltimore, while Cliff Lee is not pitching well in his Ranger debut.

Yep, the Rangers suck in their three outings against Baltimore. Hopefully, Cliff Lee will do better in days to come than his 6 to 1 score would suggest.
