It’s not clear if Dombrowski is simply dithering about getting another reliever for Boston, or if the price is just too high for anybody actually useful.
But damn, I’ve seen *enough *of Matt Barnes in pressure situations in the last week or so …

Is Addison Reed good enough an acquisition for you?
Works for me.
Learned it here first, folks.
Astros trade for Toronto’s Francisco Liriano and his 5.88 ERA, but they’re planning on moving him to the bullpen so maybe he’ll be better there? (Going the other way is Nori Aoki, who’s been uh ok i guess this year, and “a minor league player” so really it all comes down to who that is.)
The other player is prospect Teoscar Hernandez. I don’t follow baseball closely enough to say how good of a return it is. Still, the Jays picked up 2 prospects just to take Liriano’s contract last season and another for him now, so this sounds like it was a pretty good use of Toronto’s financial resources.
Teoscar Hernandez has a chance to be a decent player. He played okay in an emergency call-up for a couple months last year and got called up early this year an immediately got injured. Can play center field but probably shouldn’t - more of a fourth outfielder type. Anyway, he was pretty disposable as far as Houston was concerned but also the kind of guy who a rebuilding club can be pretty happy to have.
He earned it. But seriously, I do feel bad for the guy. The Cubs, however, have gone way above and beyond to try to appease him.
Yankees get Sonny Gray apparently. New York Yankees trade for Sonny Gray from Oakland Athletics
Interesting trade, 3 high end prospects but 2 currently on the DL. Mateo will probably be a good to great player, Kaprelian has a lot of talent but seems to be always injured and Fowler when he recovers will probably be a starting CF. I still need to let this sink in,
Gray clearly helps the team this year and the Yanks control him 2 more years.
Jamie Garcia is what now to the Yankees? He doesn’t seem to have a spot.
MLB network says Yu Darvish is a Dodger.

I think you’re overselling Mateo. I’d say average regular is his upside. He’s been sliding down their prospect ratings the last couple of years.
Losing Kaprelian and Fowler hurts, but the Yankees do have a lot of depth in their system. In the case of Fowler especially, it’s not like they’re hurting for young OFs, with Frazier and Judge. And they have this kid Harper playing for their Washington farm team who should be ready by 2019…
Dodgers reportedly gave up 3 prospects, 2 infielders and a right-handed pitcher. Not a bad deal, it seems. It’s not like the Dodgers don’t have depth at all of those positions. Let’s see if Darvish can bounce back from his recent setbacks and deliver some innings for his new club. Of course he’s just a rental, but the other two relievers they picked up will hopefully bolster the pen and get us through the whole thing.
Yanks get Jaime Garcia. As a Cardinals fan I can tell you that when he’s in command of the strike zone he can get batters with his junk. But he’s occasionally inconsistent. Probably not bad as a number 4 starter or spot starter.

Sonny Gray would make the Yanks a serious threat
So anyway, looks like the Astros are pretty much standing pat and betting that some combination of the starting pitchers that have gotten them this far will work in the postseason; only addition is a second lefty to the bullpen.
I agree with all of this, but I don’t have any interest in Harper. The Yankees have enough outfielders. I’d rather go after Otani and any other top market starting pitching talent.
The great thing about this deal is who gets left behind. I would keep Florial over Mateo. Losing Kaprelian hurts, maybe, but I’m happy retaining Adams and Sheffield. As for Dustin Fowler, who knows if he ever gets his speed back after that injury?
Great trade, unless Gray is a total bust. Which could happen.
Is it me or did the Dodgers get all their trade pieces for almost nothing? Calhoun can hit but he’s a DH only and the rest all lotto tickets.
I was personally bummed to see that Scott Van Slyke got shipped out for Cingriani because I always had fun rooting for him. But yeah, I don’t feel at all like they’ve depleted the farm, which is what I was most concerned about. Feeling pretty good about it all right now.
The talk radio guy I was listening to on MLB radio right after the deadline was lambasting Houston for not doing anything. Wondering how Houston’s fans are feeling about it all.
Can he please go away, once and for all? Do this in February, when no one cares.
… and Altuve makes his second out of the evening and is only 2-4 - he would need to go 5-7 to hit .500 for the month, so that’s pretty much off the table now.
