MLB: July 2018

Lol, Luis Rijo, but I’m sure we’re both old enough to remember when Jose was a prospect. I saw him pitch in Yankee Stadium when he was nineteen.

Lance Lynn is a head scratcher. OK, so he had two starts against Boston this year and gave up 2 ER in 11 innings. That’s nice, but the ERA is ugly overall. I guess you’re right and Cash is doing Rule 5 housecleaning.

But Warren? To a team that would be the wild card opponent if the season ended today? I can’t make sense of that one.

ETA: Skankees? Tsk tsk. Not nice.

Good correction, I typed Jose somehow without thinking. Luis it is.

Tommy Rich and Phamous traded to Tampa Bay. Interesting move for the Rays. He is controllable through 2021.

Toronto trades Roberto Osuna, who remains on the suspension list for domestic violence until Aug 5, to Houston; the Astros send back Ken Giles, Hector Perez, and David Paulino.

Note that although Osuna cannot join Houston until after the deadline, he is their now and can pitch in the postseason.

Frankly I am amazed Toronto pulled a deal this good. It was not going to be worth the controversy to have him back so I’d assumed they would have to trade him for a few baseballs; they got a real return. Giles is an immensely talented pitcher who has tumbled from grace in the last year but is still young and capable and isn’t facing a trial, plus two okay prospects. I am much, much more comfortable as a Jays fan to see if Giles can get over his immaturity than to try to cheer for Roberto Osuna.

One can see why Houston did this, I guess, if Giles had worn out his welcome; Osuna can pitch, baggage or no. I would not have paid as much as they did, though.

Phillies traded for 2x All-Star catcher Wilson Ramos. Woot! He’s a free agent after this season. Still a nice pickup.

Did I see where Pittsburgh acquired Chris Archer from Tampa Bay?

Dodgers just acquired Brian Dozier and a relief pitcher for Logan Forsythe and a couple of prospects. Multi-team deal. Even money, so no additional payroll. Apparently the Dodgers have decided that home runs are the way they are going to win, and built accordingly.

Chris Sale to the DL. Half of Twitter seems to think it’s a ‘rest’ DL stint. But, I’m not sure that makes sense with an upcoming series against the Yanks. If it was immediately afterwards, sure.

Guess the Nats aren’t throwing in the towel tonight, up 19-0 bottom of the 5th against the Mets

A very bad night for Mets starter Steven Matz: 2/3 of one inning pitched, eight hits, seven runs (all earned).

The Mets have already used five relievers. One wonders if they’ll send out a position player to pitch the bottom of the eighth.

Looks like it’s raining pretty hard, call the game? I’m sure neither team would mind

The Mets did, indeed, have a position player (SS Jose Reyes) pitch the 8th. He gave up 6 runs. It’s now 25-1, in the top of the 9th.

Hmmmm. The Reds didn’t trade anyone. Surprising that at least they didn’t deal Harvey, who’s by and large been pitching very well.

Interesting. The Oakland A’s are trying a subscription program for tickets in lieu of the the traditional season ticket package.

Final score 25-4. The 9th inning rally fell JUST a little short.

Thus answering the eternal question, “25, or 6? to 4”.

Nats reliever Shawn Kelley appeared to pitch a little hissy-fit in the 9th (while giving up 3 runs), glaring into the dugout. Commentators speculated that maybe he didn’t want to go in and pitch with a 24-run lead. Maybe he thought the Nats should put a position player on the mound like the Mets did.

Shoulder is not something you want to test, even in a series against the Yankees. So it might not exactly be rest, but hopefully this is the Red Sox being proactive about something that’s not a big deal. Shoulder injuries are pitcher killers, much more so than elbows.

Yep. Better catch it while it’s still just a little soreness, which is what it sounds like - he was as strong in his last start as ever, so there can’t be a structural problem. Sale was due for a break anyway, even with the strict pitch count he’s been on all year.

And just like that, they designated him for assignment. Even after his meltdown last night, he still had a respectable 3.34 ERA and 0.96 WHIP. He’ll definitely draw interest on waivers. I’m sure he’ll be scooped up in no time.
