MLB: July 2018

On the other hand, he’s given up 7 homers in 32 innings and his FIP is 4.55. Hopefully Boston will pick him up.

I am not happy about Osuna.

As for Giles, I normally hate when sports commentators try to psychoanalyze players to death, but Giles is one of those cases where a change in scenery and a different pitching staff is probably needed; whatever his issues were, the Astros were clearly not getting him over them.

I’m not thrilled either about Osuna, but where the hell is the hand-wringing about giving a job to guys like Aroldis Chapman or Jose Reyes, or any other MLB player who’s beaten their wife, girlfriend, or kid? Hell, at least Osuna had the good grace—so far as we know—to not dump up half a magazine of gunfire during his domestic dispute. Unlike Chapman. (Jeez if he used a handgun, Canada would probably have killed him.)

I don’t recall seeing vomiting gifs when Chapman got picked up by the Yankees. Or any of the other sturm und drang. We get it: Osuna’s probably a shithead, but one who’s really good at baseball, and who isn’t enough of a shithead to currently be in jail. We don’t know what happened between Osuna and his girlfriend, except that it was bad enough for the Crown to file charges against him. MLB giving him 75 games is a ‘whatever’, as they chose to not give any details either. They aren’t as arbitrary as Roger Goddell has been with the NFL, but they don’t get the benefit of the doubt.

Throw Osuna under Minute Maid if he fucks up again and decides to beat on people. Assuming he actually beat on anyone in the instant case. We’ll hopefully find out when the Ontario authorities decide to finalize things. As for Giles, he’s in the J.D. Martinez/Brad Lidge boat: talented guy who really, really needs a change of scenery. Bummer you couldn’t get full value for him.

If you can throw a fastball 105 mph, you can beat up anyone you want. And shoot at them.
