And, even at 9pm, every surface in that stadium – the field, the seats, etc. – will still be radiating away the daytime heat into late in the evening. I have to imagine it’s a very uncomfortable way to play, or watch, baseball.
I think we can throw the average temperature out the window at this point. The forecast in Vegas this week is for high temperatures of over 110 degrees every single day. Given that we are at the height of summer with days still being relatively long, the game time temperature is likely to be pretty close to that. The A’s will probably surpass the pre-Globe Life Field Rangers as the most miserable experience in baseball while waiting for the new stadium to be completed.
MLB Mixed Metaphor Award for July, courtesy of Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone, after Sunday’s extra-inning loss to the Rockies:
"“We’ve got the canvas in front of us to write our own script. That’s what we’re working hard to do.”
Writing on canvas makes the job especially hard. And with the Writer’s Guild on strike, wouldn’t they be crossing the picket line by writing their own script?
What has happened to Kris Bryant? Admittedly, the Rockies aren’t on my radar much but he seems to have fallen off a cliff.
Age takes us all
Age, and the correlated injuries. He only played in 42 games last year, due to plantar fasciitis and a heel bruise, and then missed all of June this year, apparently with a related injury.
As much as I hated the Cubs having a fire sale a few seasons ago, looking at the track records of Bryant and Javy Baez since they were traded off, it seems like the Chicago front office knew more than I did.
And Schwarber was already gone by the time of the fire sale
Yesterday, July 18, 12 teams scored in double-digits. That ties a mark set in 1884, but is one behind the 13 teams which scored in double-digits in 1894.
There were 3 games that ended 11-10, which is the first time that’s ever happened in MLB history. Another game ended 16-13, which is just the third time that four games on the same day ended with both teams scoring 10 or more runs.
Every team in the AL Central scored 10 or more runs, including the Tigers, who lost to the Royals 11-10, and the White Sox, who also lost 11-10.
Hey, the Nats got a field goal!
O’s have overtaken the Rays for the AL East lead by winning percentage (by “games behind” they’re tied). And their next opponents are each other. This week is gonna be a bloodbath!
The Yankees are in last place at 50-47. The whole division could very well finish over .500.
The Mets’ Buck Showalter has shown he isn’t going to give ground in the Battle of the Managing Metaphors, with this comment about Francisco Alvarez’s run-scoring single yesterday:
"“Wanting to be emotional is part of this game, but to keep it corralled into the funnel of the competition.”
On Tuesday night, Aaron Boone came up with this gem to describe the Yankees’ loss to the Angels:
“You don’t take your ball and go home. You stick your nose in there and grind it out…They’re not leaving any stone unturned.”
These teams may be drowning in the standings, but they’re paddling hard.
At this point it’d be mildly surprising if they didn’t. The Yankees are 50-47 despite a rash of injuries; just getting Aaron Judge back pops a few extra wins into their expected record the rest of the way.
The Atlanta - Milwaukee game tonight was a kick! Sal Frelick’s major league debut. Not bad - 2 for 3 behind the plate, with a sac fly/RBI for plate appearance #3. Add in a couple of outstanding catches in right and you have a highlight reel in his first game. The Brewers have a keeper here.
The Braves got in on the fun late, when they put in a pinch runner in the 8th, Forrest Wall in his MLB debut. Wall promptly steals 2nd, then 3rd. It took a long time for Williams to finally slam the door on the Braves.
Whoever was at the game in Milwaukee today got their moneys worth.
That was the ninth inning. He stole second and third on the first two pitches after he entered the game.
And, yes, it was a great game to watch.
Scherzer continues to be a disaster for the Mets. About every 3rd game. He has now given up 5 or more earned runs 6 times. 4 HR’s tonight. 8 times he has given up 0 or 1, and twice 2. Maybe the Mets should go to a 6 man rotation. Oh, wait, they don’t have 6 good pitchers.
The team has played well lately, I think 11-5, but it’s too late. Still 7 out.
Why not, just did a little (probably futile) math. I think the Mets, with everyone perfoming well, are a 95 win team. It’s the same team as last year that won 101 (without Diaz, so let’s subtract 6 games), Well, if the Mets play at a .58 winning percentage for the rest of the year, they win 84 games. Might be enough, but what if they play .600?
LGFM! It ain’t over 'til I say it’s over.
The St. Louis Cardinals have traded pitcher Genesis Cabrera to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for catching prospect Sammy Hernandez.
Ouch, while I don’t think Scott Rolen is a Hall
of Famer, he’s being torched online. I know why the steroid users are being rejected but it’s especially painful when Rolen and McGriff get inducted.
