Ohtani off the trade market?

Was he ever really on it?

For a blockbuster deal? Sure. Like me putting my house on the market for 4 times its value - if I get the offer, great. If not, I just keep living here.

IMO a stupid move by the Angels (so par for the course.) They can’t win, and they’ll get nothing for him after they miss the Wild Card by 5 games.

The Braves pulled off an improbable 8-3-5 triple play in Fenway on Tuesday. That play hasn’t happened in MLB since 1884.

It wouldn’t have been possible without two major baserunning gaffes by Boston. You can see the video in this story.

you forget the yearly stomping of the angels by the Dodgers sells out in LA and Anaheim also and if the MLB heavens ever open up and they move the giants to the AL we’d still have to have 2 SF/LA series just because its tradition …

OK the angels front office management is officially dumber than a box of rocks … why not trade othani when you could get a kings ransom for him rather than the squat you’re gonna get when he’s a free agent?

Other than they don’t want the dodgers or the yanks getting him cause they think they have a playoff chance this season its dumb to me

LIke a lot of fans, I have a massive baseball crush on Ohtani. I can’t see the Yankees making a run at him, though. We’re stuck with Stanton in the DH spot for the next four years and he’s virtually untradeable.

I don’t think teams are willing to back the truck up for 1/3 of a season rental. The Nats got a haul of 4 prospects for Soto because he had a couple of years left of team control, which also gave the Dads the chance to be the first in line to give him a contract. Ohtani has been pretty clear about wanting to be in the open free agent market this off-season, so that aspect is gone as well.

And it’s not nothing, but the Angels will get a 1st round compensatory pick when he signs elsewhere next year.

The Dodgers have traded pitcher Noah Syndergaard to Cleveland for shortstop Amed Rosario.

Even if they don’t make the playoffs (they are close to WC slot and Trout is coming back), the Angels get a lot out of Ohtani in terms of ticket sales and merchandise.

In a double header against Detroit, Shohei Ohtani threw a one-hit shutout in the first game, then hit two home runs in the second:

As you might expect, this has never been done before.

The teardown of the White Sox, which started last year, continues.

  • On Wednesday, they traded starting pitcher Lucas Giolito and reliever Reynoldo Lopez to the Angels
  • Today, they sent starter Lance Lynn and reliever Joe Kelly to the Dodgers

Giolito, who had been a solid starter for the Sox since 2018, had been their best starter this year. Lynn, who was an All-Star and Cy Young finalist in 2021, had been struggling this year (6.47 ERA).

So, I apologize if someone posted this already upthread and I didn’t see it, but is the reason Ohtani pitches with his right hand but bats with his left because it would be too much wear-and-tear on him if he were to do all the pitching and hitting with the right arm/shoulder?

I’ve never heard of hitting causing undue stress on either shoulder. I assume that like a lot of players, Ohtani is right-handed but learned to hit lefty because it provides an advantage in baseball.

Terrific play by Justin Turner in last night’s 3-2 Red Sox win over the Giants.

And last night Ohtani was removed from the game with a “cramp.”

He was removed, by the way, by being pinch hit for in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and the batter representing the go ahead run. Oh, and he’d hit a home run earlier in the game. It’s the most Angels thing ever.

I mean, I don’t blame the Angels for going for it. Prior to yesterday’s disheartening events the Angels were on a roll, only 3 games out of the playoffs, due to get Mike Trout back soon, and statistically no worse a team than the ones they’re in a race with. Yes, they could get a king’s ransom for Ohtani (which might necessitate trading Trout in the offseason, too.) On the other hand, they could make the playoffs with him, which would make retaining him easier.

The Angels could still trade him. I know they traded for Giolito but so what? If this weekend goes badly AND Ohtani’s injury is just a quickly resolved muscle cramp, he and some other assets can still be dealt by Tuesday for a shit-ton of prospects.

Possible trade for Scherzer in the works. He’s done but maybe can help in playoff push for the Rangers.

heh The Mets had a fire sale today

In the years following the Nats’ 2019 World Series win, we let Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, Juan Soto, and Anthony Rendon go.

So far, it seems we were wise on all those fronts.
