I thought it was an encouraging win. That umpiring crew is a joke, though.
Sometimes it’s just objective reporting. [An interesting tidbit from the daily fishwrap:](An Associated Press-GfK poll in May found that 47-39 percent, Americans trust Democrats to do a better job of handling the issue.)
Way to ump, Hohn! All those tens of thousands (okay, it’s Houston, tens of hundreds) of people in the stands paid good money to watch you do that.
He looks related to Don Zimmer. Maybe the players can pitch in some cash and bribe Pedro Martinez to kick his ass.
Phillies: 13 runs in last 10 games. Shut out more times than I care to count. Mets shut them out for an entire series!
This is an offensive powerhouse gone eerily silent.
Dodgers and D-backs go 14 innings this afternoon, with the Dodgers winning 1-0. Arizona has now lost 10 in a row, and have gone 31 consecutive innings without scoring a run.
Not like the Dodgers are doing much better. They’ve scored just 2 runs in the last 24 innings. But they’ve done it when it counts.
Maybe the rest of them finally caught whatever it was Pat Burrell had.
I love and hate listening to Charlie Steiner on the radio. He tries to give me a heart attack with just about every batter. I didn’t tune in until the 7th, and I still got nearly a game’s worth.
Nevertheless, I’ll take the “w”. Despite Garrett Anderson getting the walk-off today, I’m wonder how much longer the Dodgers are going to endure him and his sub-Mendoza average.
AAAnndd swept by the Braves. Who are 17 of their last 24. And have the best home record in the NL (I think).
And who also put up a 9-game losing streak earlier in the year. Just goes to show you, it’s a long season and things change.
Besides, you guys have the best pitcher in the game right now. Have a little patience, I don’t think the Phills are out of it yet.
Another perfect game! But it was lost on the 27th batter by a shockingly bad call at first. Link.
How an umpire can make a call like that in a circumstance like that is simply beyond me. Certainly a candidate for the worst I’ve ever seen in MLB.
Wow, that was a truly diabolical call.
It’s time for instant replay appeals.
The ump admits he screwed up: link
I wonder if Angel Hernandez will admit he blew a call tonight, too. At least it didn’t cost anybody the game or even more like in Detroit.
I’m continually amazed by the accuracy of umpires in general on bang-bang plays at first base. Some math shows a runner that’s out by a foot is out by about 0.03 to 0.04 of a second, and yet they get the call right the vast majority of the time.
But Jason Donald was out by well over a foot-everyone knows that. The ump that made the call is obviously contrite and disgusted with himself; I just heard a snippet where he displayed a weird sort of indignation toward himself on behalf of Galarraga. And yet the hidebound powers that be will insist that it’s a matter of record now and nothing can be done.
I’m with RickJay-bring on instant replay.
If the Dodgers don’t start putting up some run support for their pitchers, it’s going to be a looooong season. We can’t play Arizona every day.
They’ll watch the bag for the runner’s foot, while listening for the sound of the ball hitting the fielder’s glove. It isn’t all that hard to tell which is first, with some practice. That may have been what messed Joyce up - since Galarraga snowconed the ball, he may not have heard it and made the safe call based on seeing Donald’s foot first. All he should have done differently is take a moment to make sure, since there was no hurry to get a call made with no runners aboard.
Dave Trembley is out in Baltimore, Juan Samuel is the interim skipper, and the Orioles celebrated by getting curb stomped by the Red Sox 11-0.
On a happier note, Brett Cecil pitched eight innings as the Jays downed the Yanks 6-1. Toronto only got seven hits, but three of them were homers and one double. Bautista’s up to 18 now after adding two last night.
Should the Diamondbacks be jumping for job about picking up Willis? He really seems to have done everything to try to get his career back in order including sitting in the very highest upper deck yesterday. He is pitching well tonight.
Jays are looking for the sweep this afternoon after squeaking by the Yanks 3-2 in 14 innings yesterday. Brandon Morrow vs. Javier Vazquez is the pitching matchup.
I don’t think so. It’s pretty much impossible to get away with walking infinity batters if you aren’t just melting them away with great stuff, and he doesn’t have great stuff. 4 walks in 6 in his first Arizona start puts him at about the same rate he was walking batters in Detroit, and he’ll give up 4 runs more often than he will 0 doing that.
