MLB: June 2011

Citi Field looks like a nice park. Looks good in the background while the Yankees shake hands walking off the field…

The Blue Jays lost today through sheer defensive incompetence, and most of the horrible mistakes were not scored as errors. A ball went right through John McDonald and for no reason at all was scored a hit. Juan Rivera played a fly ball into a double; also, inexplicably, ruled a hit.

“Errors” are meaningless and a pitcher’s ERA often ridiculously understates the impact of defense. The Jays today gave up 6 earned runs, 3 at least of which would have been prevented by competent - not great, just competent - fielding.

Damn. The Reds just…cannot…beat…the Tribe. Down 3-0 right now, lost game four yesterday, swept in their first series…and wins are becoming a premium for the Reds now that the NL Central race is a quagmire with no clear team pulling away.

Its opportunity knocking Reds! Answer the door!
