So I read the artcile and it doesn’t explain why were the all star votes disqualified
was there some foul play or did MLB just not want to agree with the fans’ wishes
According to 365rundown, they’re claiming that the votes were fraudulent. I think it stemmed from Kansas City had something like 7 players that were holding leads in All-Star voting, and it seemed like to much of a coincidence.
It was inevitable that going to an online system would result in shenanigans.
I appreciate that there are many great baseball fans in Kansas City and they’re obviously happy about a team that won a pennant after many years in the wildnerness, but they aren’t THAT much likelier to cast ASG votes; I think it very obvious the voting is hopelessly unfair, that someone in KC has figured out a way to spoof the gatekeeping aspects of the balloting system.
Thankfully, this and, I’d assume, a sense of outrage in other fanbases has some sanity returning; Miguel Cabrera’s now ahead at first base and Josh Donaldson is catching up fast at third with Jose Altuve giving Omar Infante a run for his money. Cabrera, Donaldson and Altuve are all vastly more deserving choices. No offense to the guys they’re overtaking, but come on.
Actually eighth inning with one out…
/nitpick
Schilling had a no-hitter with 2 outs in the 9th in Oakland in 2007, then a clean single by Shannon Stewart after shaking off Varitek’s sign (it would have been Tek’s fifth career no-hitter). Maybe you’re mixing two memories?
Back in his Dback days Schilling had a no hitter broken up late in the game by San Deigo catcher Ben Davis. It was a bunt single against the slow-to-get-off-the-mound Schilling. He and others bitched about the unwritten rules, but I completely disagree. I don’t even consider that to be an unwritten rule. If you’re getting no-hit, you try to break it up by any means possible. Not to mention I think the score was 1-0 or 2-0. It was definitely not a blowout.
2 home runs for Kris Bryant last night
everything is coming up Cubs
it’s happening I feel it
It was 2-0. And I agree: Davis’ bunt single was a good baseball move that brought the tying run to the plate. Someone tell Schilling that there are no gimmes in life. (Well, at least in baseball. Curt has experienced a few gimmes in life.)
It’s my understanding that each IP address is limited to 35 votes, and they discovered more than 35 votes coming from particular IP addresses.
People were apparently creating multiple accounts but voting from the same computer.
There was also an exploit in Gmail that allowed unlimited votes from a single address by adding a “+” after the username. For example, rickkitchen+omarinfante@gmail.com
Cole Hamels trade rumors to the Rangers, quite interesting. Who had the Rangers and Astros battling for the AL West?
The All Star voting is a farce. They won’t fix it because they like to say things like X number of votes- more than the presidential election! But they don’t want to admit that the actual number of voters is like X/1000. I’d like to see them make it one vote per IP address rigidly enforced. And maybe no more than 3 starters from the same team. Now some AL team might get screwed out of the home field for the WS because KC hacked the system.

dad made a great play with his right hand with his baby in the left arm
First off, it’s 35 votes per email address, per day. Secondly, who cares if someone was creating more than one account and voting 70, 105, 140 times a day? Don’t like it, go out and vote. (For transparency’s sake, I’m a Royals fan, I’ve voted a total of 36 times, and every time I cast a vote for Jose Altuve.)
As well as turning rickkitchen@gmail.com into rick.kitchen@gmail.com, r.i.c.k.kitchen@gmail.com, etc. All of those have been deleted, if MLB is to be believed.
But again, who cares? It’s very easy to see that one very motivated fan base could easily and legitimately dominate the voting with a concerted effort. Is it likely that someone created some python script or something that created more unique email addresses that would be able to hack a CAPTCHA a few hundred times a day? Probably. But after deleting what they said were the easier to discern duplicates (the r.i.c.k.kitchen emails, if you will), Cabrera quickly leapt ahead of Hosmer, and a number of other races got a lot closer. The 2nd baseman race isn’t all that exciting - there aren’t a lot of household names on there. It makes sense that anyone voting is going to vote for their hometown guy. “Jose Altuve” doesn’t leap off the page like “Miguel Cabrera” does. I think it’s a little sad that my fellow KC fans think that the worst offensive player in the entire AL is worthy of All Star Game selection, especially when we’re pretty vocally calling for him to be benched/traded. So go cast your 35 votes for Altuve or Dozier - they’re both very worthy of selection. And let’s see what Manfred does with this - either way, we’re going to see at least 5 Royals in Cincinnati. (And again I’m going to call it - Bochy has Bumgarner start the game, and he mows them down.)
Scripts, exploits, bots, 35 votes per email…the whole process is ridiculous. It seems as if the best way forward is to go backwards. Eliminate internet voting.
Yeah, I had the two games conflated in my head. Thanks for the correction.
So Luis Valbuena now has 19 home runs and 22 singles. (And 6 doubles). I think McGwire managed more home runs than singles one year; anyone remember any others? (quick spot check says McGwire did it 3 of his last 4 years; Bonds did it in his 73 homer year; Adam Dunn didn’t quite manage it.)
Madison Bumgarner’s last three starts:
23.2 IP
1.90 ERA
5 R
5 BB
18 H
30 K
The Giants are 0-3 in those games.
I’d like to thank the Dodgers for going 4-7 over that time frame, though, so that the Giants could manage to keep pace at 1 game back. Awfully sporting of you chaps!
I’ve been a fan of Valbuena’s since his days with the Indians. But McGwire and Bonds he ain’t.
Where the hell was this hitting ability when he played for the Cubs??
