I know some times pitchers just don’t have it, but Ohtani was just terrible today. Four runs and 10 batters in the first inning before getting pulled completely. I thought he might at least have stayed in to field and bat, but nope. Done for the day.
And after leaving with the bases loaded, they’re cleared with a double. 7 earned runs for the day.
Two pitchers got yanked in the first inning after giving up 7 runs (Ohtani and Ashby), neither of them got a loss on their permanent record. Yesterday was weird. It was also the 3rd highest scoring day in MLB history (max of 15 games). It was 2 runs away from the top.
Yesterday in a blowout win over the Rays, the Nats’ Trea Turner hit for his third career cycle, putting him in a 5-way tie for first place in all-time MLB history.
He became the first player in modern MLB history (since they started keeping these sorts of detailed stats in 1900) to hit for the cycle on his birthday.
Back on June 12, when the Nats were in last place, Kyle Schwarber implored Nats fans not to give up on this team, promising that they were better than their record indicated. At the time, the Nats were in last place.
We’re now in second place, only two games behind the Mets.
The Angels are disadvantaged when he’s the pitcher (unless they DH for him, which they’ve done a few times) because once he comes out, they either have to use their bench players to pinch hit or let subsequent pitchers hit. It’s not a big deal but it’s an interesting predicament.
One of those good problems. They were talking about him on the Mets broadcast tonight, they said, since he is just an average pitcher, put him in right all the time, although I think they said they can’t do that because their staff is not so good
Even then he is certainly not just an average pitcher.
He needs to improve his control to take the next step as a pitcher, but I’m going to predict now he eventually won’t pitch much or will be used as a relief pitcher at most.
The most Mets thing ever in today’s game. Pirates are batting and the hitter hits a “little dribbler” down the 3rd base line. It is in foul territory initially and the pitcher runs over and knocks it toward the dugout. The umpire calls it a fair ball, and it was fair because when the pitcher touched the ball with his glove, the ball was just touching the line. Mets stand there arguing while 3 runs come in.
Pirates go up 6-0 in the 1st.
Last night Mets blew a 6 run lead in the 8th and 9th and are close to losing 5 of 7 in the series. Against the Pirates! And DeGrom and Lindor are now on the 10 day IL
I’ll be darned. Baby Bombers take 2 of 3 from Boston. Call guys up from AAA and they play like they want to stick around. Spraying the ball around, taking extra bases, who knew there was more to the game than homers and strikeouts?
