Is it too soon for the Nats to dump Davey Martinez? And take A.J. Cole along with him…
Unless there’s some really serious personnel matter, firing a guy this early is just silly, no matter how bad the team is. And really, no one thought the Reds were going to be GOOD, did they?
April firings are stupid in my opinion. Especially this year with the staggered off days and numerous weather postponements, making it hard for a team to get into any kind of rhythm. Either fire the manager in the off season or else give him until Memorial Day.
And yes, no one expected anything out of the Reds this year.
It is so nice to see the Cubs kicking butt and taking names against the Redbirds. It is even better on a day where I think we can finally declare winter to be over.
Bizarre play in the Astros-Mariners play - Evan Gattis comes up with no outs, men on first and second, grounds sharply to third, allowing the Mariners to get both lead runners for a double play - then forgets how many outs there are, starts to jog back toward the dugout, and is tagged out for a triple play. (Fortunately, the Astros win, and their bats are starting to come back to life again after a bad two-week stretch.)
My Yanks won last night but added to their MLB leading error totals.
It’s a shame Torreyes got an error because he was playing some excellent defense at a busy third base last night. His throwing error was deserved, but a regular first baseman probably scoops that up. All I can say is that I’m looking forward to more Gleyber and Bird, and less Walker and Wade.
Meanwhile, the freaking Red Sox are 16-2. Can you run away with the division in April? I don’t know why so many “experts” picked the Yanks to win the East. The Sox have a much better rotation, especially if Porcello is having an up year and Price is healthy.
Here’s the play in question. Whoops. Along the lines of throwing the ball into the stands with runners on base and only two outs.
No.
A lot of people picked the Yankees because they are a really, really good team. I wouldn’t get too invested in three weeks’ worth of data.
The Red Sox are a terrific team, too. Either team could win it. Toronto is in second now, but they won’t stay there.
The division thing was, of course, hyperbole, but I don’t regard the Yankees as favorites. Sure they’re a good team but adding Stanton doesn’t make up for the suspect rotation.
I was specifically referring to ESPN. The Yankees received 21 out of 29 possible votes to win the East.
That’s ESPN, though. They’ve long been accused of pro-Yankee bias, not always undeservedly so.
I really can’t see the problem with that, statistically. The Yankees in 2017 were a very good team that probably underperformed, if anything, due to a lack of clutch hitting. They made Game 7 of the ALCS. They were a hell of a team.
In 2017, the Yankees scored 73 runs more than Boston, a significant margin, and actually allowed eight fewer runs. In the offseason that improved just as much as Boston did, maybe more. They were not an old team. It was perfectly logical to conclude they were the best team in the division, and hell, they might still be.
Awful news from the White Sox as Danny Farquhar suffered a brain aneurysm yesterday.
It is being said Gleyber Torres (Yanks #1 prospect, MLB #5) is joining the big club tomorrow. It will likely be one of the Tylers going down, either Wade or Austin.
No hitter in progress. Yes, the Oakland A’s Sean Manaea is no hitting the Red Sox through 8 innings in Oakland! Baseball, it’s a funny game.
And it’s a no hitter! I’m going to watch the game in its entirety as soon as it is available on MLB TV for replay. About 107 pitches, 2 BB, 10 Ks, and he no hit the hottest team in baseball so far this year!
With only a little help from the official scorer, too.
I’ve always defended Jason Heyward as a good defensive outfielder, but he completely lost a ball in the sun today and certainly should have been charged with an error. That cost the Cubs two runs and I’m never confident in Coors field with only a 6-2 lead.
I can see why it could have been scored an error. Seen them called that way on far less. But I can also make the case of it being a hit. Heyward is a great, if not elite, defender. But it’s hard to rule an error because he didn’t see it. I have no official stance on the issue.
But at least Kris Bryant is okay after taking a 96 MPH fastball to the face and dome. And Almora is the highlight reel for defense tonight.
Brandon Belt of the Giants sets an MLB record by forcing 21 pitches before he grounds out. The at-bat lasted over 12 minutes.
