I think that’s what’s wrong with MLB these days. The numbers geeks run the show and managers can’t use their own common sense. Williams has zero confidence now and can’t find the strike zone with Siri’s help. It is insane to put him out there in a tight situation. Of course, they’ll let WIlliams blow a dozen games and eventually realize Weaver is the guy who can get it done.
I’m thinking an ERA of 11.25 might be enough of a wake up call to try someone different. Could be a DL coming up so they can work on making adjustments in the minors.
8 innings is a very small sample, but he has only 4 saves and I think has cost the Yanks 3 games already.
Managers acting on their own were absolutely MORE stupid, on average, than front offices - indeed, I’d say there was no comparison at all. When you think of managers of the past you think of great geniuses like McCarthy, Weaver, Herzog, Stengel. Those guys were the exception. Most managers were not fabulous at their jobs and many were clearly overwhelmed by it.
Was just reading on Reddit that the Nationals had both Pups at the Park and Fireworks night last night? That seems just like a spectacularly bad idea.
Former St. Louis and Cincinnati GM Walt Jocketty has died at 74.
Going to crosspost to the Death Pool thread.
You may well be referring to my Royals.
Right now their team batting average is .224, which is somehow better than 5 other teams in the AL. They are last in the league with 12 home runs. After 27 games, they have scored the 3rd fewest runs in the league.
But thanks to their above-average pitching (and the fact they just swept the Rockies), they are 1 game under .500 and 3 games back in the AL Central.
Babe Ruth’s first 674 games were mostly in the dead ball era.
Which also explains why Ruth has a very impressive looking career ERA of 2.28 but an ERA+ of 122. Ohtani is at 3.01 and 142.
Ohtani is the most AMAZING player I think I’ve ever personally seen, but he’s not yet the greatest player of all time or anything like that. He’s got a ways to go to be Babe Ruth or Willie Mays. If his career suddenly ended, he’d be essentially like Sandy Koufax.
Oh, and Eugenio Suarez hit four home runs yesterday, the 19th time that has been done in MLB.
And the Diamondbacks lost anyway. And yes, that’s happened before. The Braves lost Bob Horner’s four homer game (and the Phillies lost Ed Delehanty’s, back in the 19th century.)
Who is the WORST player to ever do that? I was wondering if it was Suarez but actually he’s been around longer than I realized and has had a very respectable career. Then I thought of Scooter Gennett, who was a really, really good player for a few years and then got injured and it knocked him out of baseball at the age of 29.
But it’s gotta be Pat Seerey, who never really was as good as Gennett. Seerey was out of baseball within a year after his big game. He was sort of like Rowdy Tellez, to compare him to a modern player.
Most 4-homer guys were Hall of Famers or really, really good players, guys who at least got a few Hall of Fame votes, like Carlos Delgado or Mike Cameron.
Yanks won both games of the Doubleheaders and Williams is not the closer at the moment according to Boone. Additionally Weaver closed the 2nd game with a 4 run lead.
I’ll try to find what I read where Boone said it was better for the team if Williams wasn’t the closer short term, but long term they need him to get back to who he is suppose to be.
I was glad to hear they didn’t throw Williams back into the fray in game 2, and to put him in for game one in a blowout mop up would have been an insult. I don’t get why a team has to designate one guy as “closer”, seems to me that designation puts pressure on a guy. Let the manager and pitching coach decide each day based on the flow of the game and who looks sharp in the bullpen warmup. Or (shudder) if someone is lights out in the 8th, let him finish the damn game.
Red Sox player Jurran Duran has been open and honest about his struggles with mental illness, and that he attempted suicide three years ago.
During today’s game against the Guardians, a fan was ejected for taunting him, presumably about that issue (it hasn’t been revealed what exactly was said, so far as I’m aware). To his credit, Duran showed remarkable restraint in not confronting the fan.
The Guardians issued an apology to the Red Sox organization, and to Duran himself. The team says it has identified the fan, and is working with MLB on next steps.
So, going by the current standings, it’s going to be Mets/Dodgers for the NL championship again, barring some collapse
here’s a question who’s actively the worst team the Rockies or the white sox ?
Based on my limited number of games watched, I believe the Rockies are the worst team in baseball right now. It’s close, but the current 7-game losing streak by Colorado has solidified their bottom position. That, and their .143 winning percentage.
Yankees started the game with the first three batters hitting home runs for the second time this season. Apparently they’re the first team ever to do it twice in one season, which I found surprising.
It was within my lifetime that this event happened at all. (The Padres were the first; as I reall, tony Gwynn hit the second.) It’s extremely unusual.
So Judge is 3 for 3 tonight with 3 RBIs a homer and a walk.
Batting .427 now, a 1.282 OPS.
Yankees are loosing despite this 5-4 in the 7th.
A fan has fallen over the 21-foot wall at tonight’s Pirates/Cubs game.
CPR was administered, and the fan was rushed off the field by medical personnel.
