MLB: May 2010

According to ESPN this morning, Ted Kazanski was the last one to do it in 1955.

From that link, it looks like his insider might have been a grand slam as well.

Yanks are running out of players lately. Thames who should only be a backup sprained his ankle last night. Granderson is still out. Posada and Nick Swisher are hurt but not on the DL and of course Nick Johnson is on the DL. When AJ throws a bad game and Tampa ran at will, it is tough to win a game. They made things interesting in the 9th at least.

…AND lost.

I wonder what Omar Minaya has to do to get fired. Kill somebody? Do tentacle porn? Assemble a fragile, aging, and expensive roster that still doesn’t boast a decent second starter or home run threat?

That’s where we absolutely agree. Holds and Saves are ultimately there to justify Wins and Losses as individual performance stats.

Even on that level, I think I still hate Wins and Losses more as a legitimate stat than Saves. At the end of a career, I can look at a starting pitcher’s numbers and tell if he was a good pitcher or not. That becomes much harder with relievers.

Jason Heyward is the God of Baseball’s human Avatar?

Discuss.

EDIT: JH went 3-5, 2 doubles and a triple, and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th with two out after a 7 pitch at bat.

It’s Tampa Bay. Really. Don’t make us start calling your team “New”.

Oddly enough, the last game in which both an inside-the-park home run and a triple play occurred also involved Angel Pagan and a Mets loss - last August 23, Pagan hit the inside-the-parker in the first inning against the Phillies. That game memorably ended with Jeff Francoeur hitting into an unassisted triple play to secure the Phillies’ win.

I hate being a Mets fan.

The Giants are just awful. Why does every starting pitcher look like Cy Young against them? Give them an average pitching staff, and they would contend for worst record in the league, I’m convinced. I’m not concerned about yesterday’s 13 runs allowed, so much as the complete and utter lack of offense.

sigh.

Edit : And the frigging bullpen! Wilson sure makes it exciting, even when they score a few…

Joe

So much for the Dodgers win streak. At least one member of the household was happy - my wife is a Padres fan (when the Red Sox aren’t playing).

This is going to be one of those years. Just like they all are.

Eh. We knew that would happen eventually. The question is, how do they bounce back tonight? I’m pleased that they still managed to score five runs last night off of a decent pitching team. We aren’t going to give up 10 runs every night. I am hopeful the Ramon Ortiz experiment will come to an end soon, though.

Damn. Reds were up 9-3 in the ninth inning and give up 7 frakking runs…and LOSE 10-9!!!

Craziness.

First place was short lived.

The D-bacls have put up 5 runs so far on Lincecum.

I’m sure they’ll find a way to lose the game, but it is nice to see while it lasts.

Ubaldo Jiminez is having a season for the ages. Nine starts, 8-1, 0.99 ERA. He gave up one hit in seven innings tonight, and that was on a roller that the Rockies third baseman tried to field with a bare hand and failed. I wouldn’t be surprised if the official scorer changes that play to be an error on Stewart.

This guy throws 100 mph with all kinds of movement on his fastball, an 88 mph changeup (!) and a curve in the low 80’s. He is just crushing the National League this season. ESPN just compared his season to Bob Gibson’s 1968 season.

If you get a chance to see this guy pitch, get to the game. He is one-of-a-kind. You just might see history.

I got to see him in-person during his only loss this year. He was genuinely out-pitched, but was still amazing and gave up only one run.

SWMBO and I are going to an Astros game tomorrow. We haven’t been to one in a while and I’m looking forward to it.

Oswalt is demanding a trade…

The Yankees are always hateable. It doesn’t matter who’s on the team, they’re still the yankees. If you want a player to hate though, I can’t stand Jeter.

Jays beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Orange County, California, USA 6-0 as Cecil, Downs and Frasor combine on a three-hitter.

Wow, the Angels bullpen really sucks this year.

They only got three hits and you rip the bullpen?

Seriously, though, I’m sure the Angels are one of the bigger disappointments so far; I think everyone just assumed they’d win the West by default. Their problem is they don’t get men on base. Worst on base percentage in the league.
