MLB: May 2011

Nice to see Jeter have a good game again. 4 for 6 with 2 HRand a stolen base. Granderson continues his hot hitting too. Good win against a good team.

He’s hoping this game will make up for his next 9 horrible games, until Joe benches him for being washed up again. He’ll have another good game when he starts after that, then 9 more horrible games, rinse, repeat for the rest of the season.

Granderson leading the American League in home runs. Who would have imagined that?

Keep dreaming.

The Yanks tried early to give the game away with terrible defense.

2 HRs in a 12-5 rout against David Bush? If it were A-Rod, the New York media would be complaining that he saves his HRs for meaningless situations.

Except the 2 HRs came long before the rout and one was against Rhodes. So no, not meaningless at all.

I think Munch’s comment was more about the New York media, and about attitudes to A-Rod and Jeter in New York, than about the actual game.

We’re talking about the same 41 year old, 4.06 career ERA Arthur Rhodes here, right? But yeah - I was talking about the standard New York attitude towards A-Rod and Jeter, and how polar opposite the two receive attention.

I understand and I am saying that a lot of A-Rods offense really was in garbage time back when the complaints were being made. Jeter’s were big yesterday. The game was not a blowout until after he had done his hitting. In general the NY press stopped hammering A-Rod at least 3 years ago and so this is some old and stale stuff anyway.

Wow! You really believe that?

Well, let’s exclude the last three years then, shall we?

A-Rod has been in New York for 7 full seasons before this year, so we’ll look at his first 4 seasons, the time when you say that the NY press was hammering him, and when “a lot of [his] offense really was in garbage time.”

This is the guy who, in two out of his first four years in New York, was pretty much personally responsible for the Yankees making the playoffs, and who won the AL MVP in those two years. A guy who, in his first four years as a Yankee, had an OPS+ equal to Derek Jeter’s best year ever.

Here’s A-Rod’s line for those terrible, wasted, “garbage time” offensive years: .303/.403/.573, 173 HR, 492 R, 513 RBI

Boy, “offensive” is right! P U! Amiright?

No more Milton Bradley

I think he’s done in MLB.

I thought that last year too, but he came back. They sent Langerhans away too. The M’s kept Saunders, who can field well, but can’t hit. I hope Gutierrez comes back soon.

Nice pitching duel going on in San Francisco.

Both starting pitchers (Lincecum and Kennedy) made it through the 8th, and it’s still 0-0 going into the 9th.

Where have all the baseball fans gone? This thread has been very quiet.

Watching another pitchers’ duel today, this one between Seattle and Baltimore. Of course, given the poor offense of those two teams, the low score isn’t too much of a surprise. The pitchers are being helped today by a strike zone that is, as Jim Palmer said a few minutes ago, the size of Texas.

Both starting pitchers went 9 innings without a decision, and it’s still 0-0 in the bottom of the 11th.

Woohoo!

Orioles went down 1-0 in the top of the 12th, but walked off with a 2-1 win on a 2-RBI single in the bottom of the inning.

I like this “Turn Back the Clock” series in NY this week. Originally I thought that 1978 seemed like a weird year to revisit, but watching the Royals pound on the Yankees is really enjoyable (and yes, I know the Yankees beat the Royals in the playoffs that year - I’m not delusional). (Yeah - yesterday’s game was bizarre. No reason the Royals should beat the Yanks 4-3 on 4 hits v. 12.) Love seeing Hosmer start strong.

I’ve been really busy playing baseball.

We have the Small One in T-ball now as well, which is… quite something.

Never mind that. Did anyone else know that Bobby Bonilla is getting $1.2 million a year from the Mets through 2035? That’s mind boggling.

That’s the second blown save by Brandon League in extras. Those are his only blown saves. David Aardsma ain’t coming back any time soon. Plus, he lost a game in the 10th after pitching a perfect 9th to keep the score tied. All in the last week. The M’s were within one game of .500, but they’ve lost five straight since.
