MLB: May 2011

Rangers, ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the 9th w/ 2 men on, 2 outs, a 3-2 count and 100+ mph Feliz in to save lose 1-2. Damn.

Make me an offer I can’t refuse.

More seriously, it’s beginning to become a concern - is this Pujols the one that whoever signs him for a bajillion dollars will be getting? Or is it an aberration?

Madison Bumgarner sails through the Dodgers on a 4 hit shutout for 8 and 2/3 innings. Then gives up a single and a double (there goes the shutout) and Brian Wilson comes in.

Who promptly walks the bases loaded…and gets bailed out when RF Nate Schierholtz makes a diving grab of a sinking line drive, to end the game.

Torture.

You didn’t think winning the World Series was going to end the torture, did you? Torture is in this team’s blood. And let’s face it, we love them for it.

Very true, but we’ll see how it ends.

Kind of an awful year to root for the Astros. As much as I like Drayton McLane, he made a huge mistake letting Hunsicker go. New owner Jim Crane seems extremely dedicated and passionate. Looking forward to some better personnel decisions and a return to respectability.

In seriousness, why on earth would they trade their only hitter? He’s affordable. There’s nobody to replace him. The team would go from being respectable to being bad, thereby turning off fans who’re interested in the team for the first time in years. You wouldn’t get appropriate value for him. I don’t see an upside.

What is this recent uproar over interleague play again? Its all over the sports talk shows. I guess I’m not a baseball purist but I really like it. There were a couple hosts on ESPN radio that basically said that the only people that would like interleague play were casual fans that don’t understand the grave implications of the inequality of interleague play.

Hey sports talk show guy: bite me. They play 162 freaking games. 18 interleague games is NOT a big deal. The owners like it because attendance goes up pretty dramatically (which means it ain’t going anywhere anytime soon) and fans like me like it because you get to see your team play someone you wouldn’t otherwise get to see unless you get lucky and make the World Series.

It isn’t like “how good Team X” is going to be is known when the schedules are made before the season begins.

I just don’t understand why fans and apparently some baseball people get so worked up over it. If you think you’re a good team, then beat other good teams no matter what league they are in. Interleague play is supposed to be fun and provide some variety…which it does.

Frankly I get pretty damn bored with my favorite team playing other teams in their division so many times. One less series against one or two of them a season is not a big deal (at least, to me). Or barring that, play a couple less series against teams outside your division but within your league.

Jayson Stark’s column about interleague issues.

The main issue is that the schedule has no rhyme or reason to it. The NFL has interconference play, and while that can end up being kinda unfair in certain seasons, at least there’s a structure to it.

MLB’s problem is that there’s not really many potential interleague rivalries, and the pairings often depend on expected TV ratings. His first example is a good one: the Mets have to play 6 games against the Yankees, while the rest of the NL East doesn’t have to play any games against them.

He’ll never have higher value. I understand that he’s the best hitter right now, but what better time to do it? Trade him to Kansas City for a few of their prospects.

My point is that there is no better time.

Goddammit Reds!

Fucking bunt!

ETA: Scroll down to “Cabrera’s Infield RBI”…un-fucking-real.

Suck it, Reds!

Great game. Should be a good season series.

Hey, MLB.COM, it’s Eziquiel Carrera, yo! (They’ve fixed it since FGIE posted that link, but for about a half hour it said “Cabrerra”)

Screw you guys, I’m going home!

Wait…I’m already there…goddammit!

I suppose I shouldn’t be too pissed considering the Reds runs were the favor of the Indians uncharacteristic defensive blunders, but still!

When you’re up 4-0 in the 6th and your starter hasn’t given up a hit…you’re supposed to WIN goshdarnit!:slight_smile:

See, this is what I was talking about earlier. Cleveland had 5 runs on just 5 hits. When they tied it up in the 6th, they got a hit batsmen, a walk, and a sacrifice to drive in 3 runs. They’re patient hitters that take what the pitcher gives them.

BoSox have won 7 straight and after that awful start are now in 2nd place in the AL East. I’m certainly not counting chickens yet, the Yankees aren’t out of it and the Rays are playing well, but things are coming around.

Losing Dice-K will hurt a bit; right now losing Lackey doesn’t hurt at all.

Yeah. As a Sox fan, I’m feeling pretty good tonight, but I’m also worried about the other shoe dropping the next time through the pitching rotation. Millwood’s signing barely registers on my radar… hope Aceves and ol’ Wakey really step up. Maybe starting again, and the prospect of working toward his 14 more wins, will motivate Wakefield!

For tonight, though, I’m content.

2 more for Bautista today. (In before RickJay!)

Josh Johnson headed to the DL with shoulder issues. He says it’s bothered him the whole season. If this is how he pitches with a bad shoulder, I wonder how he would pitch when healthy.

Hall of Famer Gary Carter diagnosed with multiple brain tumors

I don’t know how many heartbreaker 1 run losses a fella can take!

We had the lead (again) and lost it (again)!!
Helluva pitching matchup today though. Homer Bailey was lights out until the 7th and the guy pitching for the Indians was really good too.
