MLB: May 2012

I think the problem with Bills is that he has great stuff, but he’s a thrower, not a pitcher. I’m not sure he’s shown any signs of actually becoming a pitcher, either. He makes a lot of pitches, even on his good nights it seems, and doesn’t really show the ability to get the outs when his A-stuff isn’t there. That said, he’s fine as a 2-3, but he’ll never lead a staff.

On a sadder note, it looks like Lilly is finally coming back down to earth. I really didn’t expect it to last all season, but it was a great start.

ETA: It’s great to see all the dodger fans sticking their heads out after the long winter of McCourt.

Yes. This is a better way of putting it. His stuff is fantastic, but he doesn’t *pitch *well and at this point it doesn’t look like he ever will. Still, his stuff is good enough to keep him in any rotation for a long long time. He’s a good #3, he just isn’t the 1 or 2 he should have been.

Broomed!

Indians win 2-1 against Verlander today. You know, at this point the Tigers really only have three guys they can count on offensively. They really miss V-Mart.

Hopefully a home sweep, coupled with more stable good weather, will eliminate the attendance problem.

I’ve been very pleased that the fans (at least the ones who ARE coming to the games) have stood behind Chris Perez and his comments. I don’t really see why anyone would be upset by it. I would hate to have someone playing for my team who doesn’t care who is in the stands as long as they’re collecting a paycheck. I appreciate his passion for the game.

Also, did you see how far Choo hit that pitch?

He definitely got all of it. Love him hitting leadoff.

Yeah, I’m hoping this is a momentary swoon, because they need a streak now where they go .600 or .700 to get back to where they should be.

…aaaaaand the Reds sweep the Braves in a four game series to assume first place in the NL Central. Reds pitching is on fire lately…especially Aroldis Chapman.

Is anyone paying attention to this guy’s numbers? They are ludicrously good.

He’s appeared in 20 games with 24 innings pitched, has a 0.00 ERA, is 4-0 and has 43 SO’s against 7 bases on balls.

In his 24.1 innings, Chapman has given up a grand total of seven hits. That’s domination.

Ooh, I think I screwed up his stats. He has given up seven hits, not BB’s. I think he has like 9 walks (which is still really damn good).

I mean, he’s striking out almost HALF of all the batters he faces! I believe he’s on pace to set some kind of all time strikeout record for a reliever if I’m not mistaken.

The Dodgers rotation is settling down to reality, but we still need a “Gagne-in-his-prime” closer (and a left fielder and a third baseman and someone at first who can hit). I agree with NAF about the Billingsly hype. It’s sad though. We could just taste Drysdale/Koufax 2.0.

I haven’t looked. What did that debacle against the Douche-backs do to Lilly’s ERA?

3.14, which is still plenty respectable. I didn’t know much about him before he came to LA, but his career ERA is just above 4, so he probably has a couple more of those type of outings in him.

On the plus side, Kershaw’s on the mound tonight to hopefully stop the mini-bleeding from the last two starters’ performances.

Given that it’s a cold, drizzly day in LA, we’re taking on the Astros, and it’s the start of a long weekend (when most of the LA residents who can afford the current gas prices usually skip town), I’m hoping for a little extra elbow room at the game tonight.

I fell asleep before the end of the game last night. Now I wish I hadn’t.

AJ Ellis is my new favorite player on the Dodgers.

AJ2KC!

We need him, and everyone else on offense. The last four pitching starts for the Dodgers have all been questionable. On the plus side, Matt Kemp is scheduled for a rehab assignment at AAA, so hopefully, he’ll be back soon.

It might make you happy to know that Yankee hitters are 1 for their last 29 with the bases loaded.

Yankee haters might also enjoy knowing that through their first 46 games, the pitching staff has given up 60 homers and over 100 doubles. The whole team has been hard to watch this season.

Mat Latos started today for the Reds. He pitched 7 and 1/3 innings and only allowed 5 men on base. All 5 were solo home runs.

The Reds still won though.

Also, in the same game Todd Frazier hit a home run for the Reds when the bat flew out of his hands.

How about them Redlegs? They are starting to make the conversation interesting in the Central, despite it being early yet in the season. They are winning a lot of games after a poor start out of the gate. First place feels good right now, even if it may be temporary.

Kemp’s back!

BFD. We can crush the defending World Champions but we can’t get past the Brewers?

C’mon, Dodgers! This is going to be a long road trip coming up if you can’t get it together.

They’re looking pretty solid right now, no doubt. They are way behind the Cards in run differential (+18 vs. +68) but the Cards keep losing 1-run games (another one last night took them to 3-9 in one-run games vs. 9-6 for the Reds). Should be a fun race all summer.
