I never understood why you could step toward 2nd or 3rd w/out throwing the ball (unlike 1st and home where you have to throw the ball if you step in that direction). Just change that rule (you have to throw in whichever direction you step) and you’ll fix this ‘problem’.
So Castro is up with a man on 1st and 3rd. He grounds into a double play, runner on 3rd scores. No throwing error or anything, but Castro is not credited with an RBI. Why not?
Well, because the rule says so.
As to why the rules says that, the underlying assumption is that the run scored as the result of the fielder choosing to throw out Castro for a second out, rather than hold the runner. That is, the run scored on a fielding play that occurred subsequent to, and distinct from, the play on the batted ball; such runs are never counted as RBIs.
Just hit another moonshot! <Dan Patrick> He is, dare I say it, en fuego. <Dan Patrick>
Ok, Hamilton’s production has officially gotten silly.
Guerrero is a hall of famer as far as I’m concerned. The numbers speak for themselves, and for me it always helps a guy’s case if he has something extra: in Vlad’s case, he earned a reputation as perhaps the most omnivorous hitter who ever lived. He would swing at anything and often he’d hit it very, very hard even if it was nowhere near a strike.
I can’t remember where I read it, but there was a story about when Guerrero first came up with the Expos, and during a team meeting they were asking a Dominican guy who’s seen him how to pitch him. It went like
“Okay, so should be jam him inside?”
“No, you can’t do that, he can get around on anything.”
“Okay, so we’ll pitch him outside.”
“No, no, you can’t do that, he’s got these weird long arms, he can reach that.”
“Okay, we’ll pitch him low.”
“Oh, you sure don’t want to do that, he’ll golf it over the fence…”
As to Josh Hamilton, here’s how hot he is; he hit a home run today, and overall his stats are now *a bit worse *than they were before the game.
Here’s what i said about Baltimore near the end of last month:
Well, they have now played 12 of those 15 games, and have gone 8-4 over that stretch. Three of those four losses came against the Rangers; the Orioles are 7-1 against the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays over the past couple of weeks.
At 22-12 overall, they’re 3 games over their X W-L, so they’ve been a little bit lucky, but even at 19-15 they would be doing far better than i expected before the season started.
Keeping my fingers crossed that they can keep it up.
Jose Bautista has played ten games in his career at Minnesota’s Target Field. In those ten games, he has hit ten home runs.
Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau have played over 230 games, between them, at Target Field, and have combined to hit seven home runs.
Nice little article here. Classy move by Cardinals’ fans. And Stan Musial and his wife were married for 72 years!
Video of the ovation.
Congrats to Kevin Millwood who got his 2,000th K today. Andy Pettitte is pitching in the same game in a battle of ancient warhorses.
Chipper’s ovation doesn’t surprise me in the least. As he said, St. Louis has the best baseball fans.
Just ask anyone in St. Louis.
Very classy move by the Cards’ fans. I was happier with the sweep, however
Votto 3 HRs with a a walk off grand slam. JV is one heck of a hitter. If the Reds just had other batters around him the could really be dominant.
Huh. Three consecutive 6-2 games between the Mariners and Yankees - the first two in favor of New York, the third in Seattle’s.
Jay Bruce has been better than Votto so far this season, at least until today.
The Dodgers have managed to get wins the last four games without much of any contribution offensively from Matt Kemp. Looks like they’re going to have to keep figuring that out, as Kemp finally succumbed to his hamstring issue today. The Dodgers are awaiting the results of an MRI he’ll have tomorrow to see how long he’ll be out. If he winds up on the DL, he’ll be the 3rd Dodger already this season to go down with a hamstring injury, following Juan Rivera and Jerry Hairston.
I’m starting to wonder what they’re putting in the water in that clubhouse.
Will Josh Hamilton ever level off? Jeez that guy is on a tear!
