MLB: May 2018

Well theres a sample size for you!

jk

In all the stats that matter, he’s doing better than his career average this year. He’s getting on base and he’s hitting for power.

I HOPE he gets less. God knows what Mookie will cost.

The Yankees seem to play up or down to their competition. Played very well against teams like Houston and Los Angeles, then do so-so against Oakland and Texas. Good show by Tanaka today, Didi showing some signs of getting out of his funk.

Anyone else hate how the players are treated like colorform dolls and dressed up for holidays? How about taking the money they spend on special uniforms and camo catchers’ protection and donate that to charity.

Actually an awful lot of the “colorform” clothes are sold as gamed used and donated to charity and brings in far more than the cost of making said “colorform” uniforms and gear.

Oh, and I don’t really mind it, though I do prefer to just see the teams dress normally.

Are you sure that’s the right analogy?

I think yesterday’s Yankees vs. Angels game might have been the most boring baseball game I’ve ever seen. Mike Trout was there…he was 0-4. Shohei Ohtani got the crowd excited by walking twice. Giancarlo Stanton displayed his mighty swings but declined to smack the ball into fair territory. Aaron Judge lashed the hardest hit single in human history or something like that.

But that wasn’t the real problem. Masahiro Tanaka works rather slowly. Deliberately. He nibbles a bit, but hey, that’s baseball. Garrett Richards seemed to be trying to demonstrate how long he could hang out on the mound without actually throwing the ball. His 2 1/3 innings and 70 pitches took longer than construction of the 2nd Avenue subway. Baseball has always been a slow pace game…a game that I love. But this is getting ridiculous.

Andrelton Simmons hit a home run. I was slightly excited by that because he’s come so far as a player, but home runs are all the offense we see anymore. What I wouldn’t give for back-to-back doubles and a single up the middle. I’d probably have an excitement induced coronary if I witnessed a double steal or a suicide squeeze.

20 strikeouts and 9 Hits. Bleh.

Boston has played 4 more games than New York so far - that means 4 more rest days over the remainder of the season. There shouldn’t be so much disparity. But at least they don’t get the damn Rays again for a little while - it seems like they’ve played every two weeks so far.

Speaking of the Rays, all that winning must have made them giddy. They just traded away their only 2 remaining semi-decent major leaguers just to make sure. Or maybe they’re just following the fantastically successful Montreal strategy of getting a new ballpark by making the market not give a damn anymore.

Big week for the Astros - 3 at NYY followed by 4 at home vs. Boston.

Question for those who’ve been: What’s your opinion of the Washington Nationals ballpark? I know I’m going to DC later this year, trying to decide if I want to deal with the hot weather in September, but have a chance to see a ballgame, or else wait until later in October for a better chance at cooler weather, but unless the Nats go deep into the playoffs, I won’t get to catch a game.
Also, if I do go in September, would it be worth it to try to get to Baltimore to see the Orioles? I’m not sure that’ll be possible using public transport, but that’s also a ballpark I’ve never been to.

They’re both worthwhile stadiums. Take the tour in Baltimore if you can.

Nats Stadium feels intimate while watching a game, kind of like AT&T or PNC (though the outside view isn’t as spectacular as either). Good food, too. The Club Level seats are worthwhile, in my opinion.

Orioles Park just feels like a great stadium to watch a game. Highly recommended. Same note about the Club Level seats if you can afford 'em on Stubhub. Nice to be able to inside when you need to for food, short bathroom lines, and shade. The ushers at Orioles Park are also great. Plus, you “get” to experience one of the odder National Anthem crowd traditions.

Nationals Park is pretty nice. Much nicer than RFK was. Not as cool as Griffith Stadium was, however.

–One with a long memory.

Subpar game by Verlander - 1 run in 6 2/3 innings and his ERA went up. Astros survive their bullpen and get the win.

That’s mostly due to weather. The Yanks had, what?, three games in a row rained out.

Oh great - just what the Jays need - Donaldson’s calf sidelining him, and which will do wonders for his saleability. As each day passes now, his value goes down the more he stays off the field and continuing to hit, well, not exactly my weight (not that shitty, yet) but not where he should be, like his teammates.

Just got a Dan Shulman update - Donaldson’s doing much better than expected - possibly returning Friday.

There was almost going to be an opening for Vlad Jr. Pity.

Perhaps more bizarre is the Blue Jays going to every possible length to get Russell Martin in the lineup. He’s started at third, short, and left field, all positions he’s bad at.

Martin is batting .161 as of today.

I know baseball pretty well but I am really baffled as to why Toronto is going to so much effort to get Martin into the lineup instead of any number of reasonably capable other ballplayers they have. Forget Vlad Jr.; why is Martin in left field instead of Dwight Smith Jr., for instance? Or at short instead of Gio Urshela? Those guys aren’t great but I bet they’ll hit better than .161 and I know they can field those positions.

Russell Martin seems like a nice guy and he’s one of the best ballplayers Canada has ever produced, which is cool, but a team clearly headed for a losing season should not be wasting playing time on yesterday’s players.

I haven’t been to the Nationals ballpark, so I can’t answer that. I have been to Camden Yards many times, and I would strongly recommend that you visit if you have any interest at all. It’s just a wonderful place, and still looks great. One plus for Camden Yards is you can buy food and drink as you are walking in, and you can take it inside with you. Peanuts and water are about one-third the price right outside the ballpark.

You’d have to look up the schedules, but you can take a train to and from Union Station in DC to Penn Station in Baltimore.

Camden Yards is a great stadium. Bonus, walking distance to the Inner Harbor and the Babe Ruth museum.

Been to both. Nationals Park seems pretty generic. For some reason, it just doesn’t seem to have the intimacy of Camden Yards.

I went to see the Nats last year. I thought the stadium was nice and worth a visit.

I would also highly recommend Camden Yards. It’s a really great stadium. I was living in DC in the late 1980s-early 1990s, and I used to go up to Baltimore to see the O’s, first at Memorial Stadium and then at Camden Yards.

When I lived there there used to be a special bus from DC to Baltimore directly to Camden Yards for games. I’m not sure that they still do that now that DC has it’s own team. However, it appears to be fairly simple using Amtrak, MARC, or bus.
