MLB May 2026

Yesterday, I was seeing rumors about Volpe being traded. Today I see rumors of him being called back up to the Yanks.

I guess both could be true.

Bummer for Yankee fans as Caballero goes down with a fractured finger. Volpe has not been good in the minors and wouldn’t be called up otherwise.

In positive news, MLB and the players union have started preliminary talks about a new collective bargaining agreement.

I’m not encouraged. The sides are very far apart and there is talk of Trump getting involved.

You’re probably right. But at least they’ve started talking. Gotta start somewhere.

Well, I can say that both the Sox and Cubs are playing at a much higher level than expected. In fact, both are near or at the top of their divisions right now. The Cubs lost two starters for the season right from the get-go, so I don’t think they’ll last through the season unless they have a diamond-in-the-rough somewhere in the minor leagues that is brought up and pitches great. The Sox have a very young team and some real pitching and hitting talent. I see them only getting better and making the playoffs next year.

The Yankees got one hit by the Orioles but the worst part is Max Fried left after the third with elbow soreness. He claims to not be worried about it but it usually isn’t good news.

The White Sox won their fourth straight last night to pull to .500 on the season, good for second place in the ALC.

Unfortunately, one of their fans got a little too excited.

Blue Jays get a walk-off grand slam by Varsho in the bottom of the 10th to wipe out Tampa’s 2 runs in the top of the 10th. Tampa Bay Rays vs Toronto Blue Jays Box Score: May 13, 2026 | Baseball-Reference.com

Edwin Diaz tied to cockfighting?!

This ranks there with Michael Vick and dogfighting for things that were never on my bingo card!

In better news, Detroit pitcher Tarik Skubal is already playing catch, two weeks after his elbow surgery.

Gotta do something to stay active when you are on the IL.

The injury news gets worse for the Mets. Starting pitcher Clay Holmes sustained a right fibula fracture when he was hit with a comebacker.

From your link:

Now, Holmes will join a lengthy injured list that includes four starting position players – shortstop Francisco Lindor (calf), first baseman Jorge Polanco (Achilles/wrist), center fielder Luis Robert Jr. (back) and catcher Francisco Alvarez – and starter Kodai Senga (back).

The Mets should be looking to be sellers this year. Also the owners need to be thinking about a new GM I think.

I was watching the game sporadically while I was out having dinner and a few drinks. I didn’t see the play where it happened. He stayed in for an inning and a half pitching on a broken leg. The announcement was a big surprise at the post game press conference.

The Yankees got better injury news. Max Fried doesn’t have a UCL tear like some speculated. He has a bone bruise in his elbow. He will be out for a few weeks but it doesn’t appear to be a long term issue.

I was wondering how frequent walk off grand slams were. As near as I can tell the Blue Jays have had, in franchise history, five walk off slams.

The weird part is that Steve Pearce had two of them… just three days apart.

I remember Bob Gibson doing that back in 1967

This isn’t MLB-related, but I went to the Banana Ball game yesterday - The Party Animals v. Indianapolis Clowns.

We had an absurdly good time. I spent a little extra for Backstage tickets, and we got to meet the teams before the game, including owner Jesse Cole, and former MLBers Jackie Bradley Jr. and Ryan Howard.

As it being their very first homestand, the Clowns debuted their show. It was heavy on history and honoring their Negro League roots - it was amazing. They did a Shadow Ball routine that would have made the Monarchs and Black Barons proud.

I also received a Golden Ticket that said “please arrive at the top of the steps between Sec 107 and 108 at mid-5th”. At the allotted time I took my boys and their friends, and the representative who met us asked “would you like to spend the next inning in the dugout?”

Needless to say…

That’s awesome. They sure make for a fun day at the ballpark.

Sometimes shaking things up does work. The Phillies have gone 15-4 under interim manager Don Mattingly, who took over after the firing of Rob Thomson on April 28th. They are now back over .500, and in second place in the NL East.
