MLB May 2026

Note their best player has been in a slump all season so far.

Acuna is dealing with injuries. He just came back from a hamstring problem and now he’s got a problem with his thumb.

The Astros got an improbable no-hitter tonight:

Thanks for that link, @Munch - that looks awesome.

what amazed me is Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski threw 57 pitches over 100 MPH!!

Not the MLB, but interesting nonetheless:

According to this ESPN article, Shinnosuke Abe has resigned as manager of Japan’s storied baseball team Yomiuri Giants after being arrested for the alleged assault of his teenage daughter.

I saw him mow down my Yankees a few weeks ago. Very impressive. You just hope guys like Mis and Skenes can make it to free agency before the inevitable Tommy John surgery.

ETA: Starting pitchers (perhaps innings based) should be eligible for free-agency sooner than position players. At least one year would be fair. The wear and tear on their bodies is a different animal. Skubal, for instance, should already be on a long-term contract. Wherever.

So the Cubs go from leading the Division and tied for the best record in baseball to last place in the Division in 10 games. A team with two 10 game win streaks has a 10 game losing streak. Either Counsell or the GM has to go. And the team needs a shake up. Send Hoerner, Swanson, and Kelly to AAA for a couple of weeks to work on their hitting. Bregman is the 7 hitter with PCA 6. They literally can’t do worse, but maybe it will wake some guys up.

Nice payday for those guys, as the Cubs would have to DFA them.

Excuse me, sir, but are you really advocating sending Nico Hoerner to the minors? A player on track for another 6 WAR season? I know he’s slumping a bit right now, but surely have a little faith?

Exactly; all three have far too much MLB service time to be sent down to the minors against their will. AIUI, unless Cubs management could convince them to agree to go down to “get right,” they can’t be sent down; they would have to be DFA, which would mean that the Cubs are effectively writing them off.

It’s possible that post was ill-considered.

But this is ridiculous. The White Sox are supposed to be the shitty team in Chicago.

Looked at through a historical lens, they’re both supposed to be shitty.

Speaking of the Cubs and White Sox, someone who pitched for both teams, Craig Kimbrel, was recently DFA’d by the Mets. However, he dazzled in his Tampa Bay debut, striking out 2. He’s currently pitching for his 12th Major League team.

Today, May 27, is the 5-year anniversary of the Javy Baez baserunning fiasco that allowed the Cubs to steal a run on what should have been a third-out play. In honor of that, ESPN has a detailed breakdown of the play, including what the players, managers, and umpires were thinking. It’s pretty interesting.

Gerritt Cole just pitched a brilliant win for the Yanks. 6 and 2/3 innings 79 pitches. 10ks only 4 hits.

Yanks pulled away late for a 7-0 drubbing to complete the sweep over KC.

That was apparently the 13th straight regular season win over KC.

ETA: Actually it is 14 straight.

The Cubs snapped their 10-game losing streak with a 10-4 win over the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh native Ian Happ batted in 5 runs.

They snapped the streak. And get to face Paul Skenes tomorrow.

And beat him 7-2.

Cards up tomorrow though in the first 3 of their season-long 13 games against them.

In other news, the owners have made their first hard offer to avoid the looming lockout/strike…

And Pittsburgh native Ian Happ homers again in his hometown.

I wonder if all the “cheap” low-payroll team owners will go for increase
