This doesn’t make any sense to me, maybe I’m not understanding something. Didn’t the Sox offer him 14 million for one year in the off-season, which he rejected? Didn’t he stand to have a bidding war, with the possibility of going to an actual contender, erupt around him in a couple weeks? Why the heck would he sign with Boston for $10 million right now?
All reports are he liked it here and wanted to come back to a championship contender. There might not have been as much of a market as you think, at the price he wanted - the Mets and maybe the Tigers and that’s about it. Next winter, he’ll still be just as valuable a commodity, except without the draft choice attached. What doesn’t make sense is why he’s keeping Boras as his agent after the guy just cost him $4 million.
Yup, Span and Desi are finally heating up and Espinosa is still making some quality at bats.
Detwiler is still Detwiler, unfortunately.
Yeah, the bidding war Happy and obviously Drew, expected never materialized.
Yeah, that was painful. Not only was Cueto shaky, the Reds errors didn’t help either. We’ll see if the good Alfredo Simon shows up today in the rubber match.
The Reds have all kinds of problems…missing Joey Votto and Jay Bruce definitely hurts, as does not having Latos although the starting pitching has been pretty much the lone bright spot all season despite him not having played.
The Reds bullpen has just been horrid. They still own MLB’s highest ERA while pitching the fewest innings. That’s bad.
It’s going to be extremely helpful once Latos returns as they can then shunt Simon back to the pen, whom, along with Broxton, LeCure and Chapman are a solid back end. Problem is those four can’t close out every game, so that means more of the same from the likes of Manny Parra, Logan Ondrusek, Shawn Marshall and Hoover. Those guys have been really, REALLY bad.
On top of all that even with Votto and Bruce in the lineup the Reds offense is extremely inconsistent. If they can’t turn that side around I’m not seeing playoffs for my redlegs again this season.
Got tickets to see the Reds play the Nats this afternoon – hoping it doesn’t get rained out. Too bad so many Reds are on the DL.
6-5 and the first pitching change in the Tigers-Indians game in only the top of the 3rd. Looks to be a wild one.
Which is fine, so long as the Indians win.
I think you meant, too bad so many Nats on the DL.
I know the Cubs have a terrible record, and it’s easy to pick on them (I’ve done it myself) BUT they actually have a positive run differential (!) and ESPN’s playoff odds tracker gives them better odds of making the playoffs at this point than any of the following teams:
San Diego, Arizona, Pittsburgh, NY Mets, Phillies, White Sox, Texas, Houston, Cleveland, and Tampa Bay
and just behind Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Boston.
COULD THIS FINALLY BE THE YEAR???
(Probably not, but hey…)
Something I just noticed – don’t the line coaches have to stay in the box any more? Seems like they are anywhere but behind those lines.
Good God. I wasn’t kidding about a wild one.
Scherzer pitched seven innings, despite giving up seven runs. Detroit took a two-run lead into the 9th. Indians hit a two-run shot to tie it up. Detroit took a one-run lead in the 13th, and the Indians tie it up again in the bottom.
And then, the most exciting play in baseball – with the bases loaded, Al Albuquerque BALKS in the winning run!
Where’s Harry Carey when you need him?
I had to open my fucking mouth. Walkoff balk? What the hell. Now a crappy bullpen to begin with is all torn up going to Texas.
Rain delay in the top of the sixth with the Reds leading 2-1. It was a good decision to go for cheap seats. I don’t have to run for cover.
As if the Dodgers didn’t have enough problems, Miguel Oliva has to go all Evander Holyfield on our $28 million Cuban 2nd base prospect, Alex Guerrero.
I’m finding it difficult to even comprehend that story. I have to assume there was bad blood before then. I would think Olivo had been around too long to be that juvenile.
ERA dips to 1.46. Hasn’t recorded a win since Aug.24,2013. First pitcher since 1977 to lead his league in ERA this late in the season despite not having a win, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. What anti-depressive drug(s) would you prescribe (To: Samardzija. To: The Team. To: The Fans?) Bonus points for a good craft beer.
If it hadn’t been for Cueto having an unusually sub-par game last night Johnny would still be the MLB ERA leader.
Reds take the series 2-1 after winning today 2-1. Where did this version of Alfredo Simon come from? He’s been a beast this year! His career numbers are less than stellar. He seems to have taken a shine to the starting role in lieu of Mat Latos.
Balk-off!
They really needed this sweep. I know it’s only May, but they were 10 games out, and Detroit was rolling. I’d really appreciate it if they could keep hitting with RISP and stop sucking ass on defense going forward.
I liked that Brad Ausmus stuck with Scherzer after he got battered around today. He shut the Indians down his last 4 innings and ended up with a no-decision. It nearly paid off.
Both the Reds and Bats made impressive fielding. Particularly impressed by Phillips.
Reds took lot of risks stealing and got caught a couple of times. Don’t know why they were doing that.
There was a point in the 6th inning I think with two out and runners on 1st and 3rd. I was shocked that the reds didn’t send a pinch hitter in for pitcher Simon. With only a 2-1 lead why would you let the pitcher make the third out?
