MLB Offseason Thread 2024-2025

Now there’s rumours the Jays want to sign Pete Alonso, which would likely mean trading Vladimir Guerrero Jr., which makes the team objectively worse.

True. But there are predictions that Vlad will command upwards of $400 million, and if they don’t think that he’ll stay, it makes sense to get as much as they can for him before he walks away.

Mark Buehrle to get a statue at Comiskey.

So give him the cash.

$400-$500 million is fair for a player of his age and ability, given recent contracts. You’ve gotta pay a star at some point. Rogers Communications has the money.

Max Scherzer to Toronto for a one-year, $15.5 million deal.

In todays baseball that’s a great deal for both sides. If he’s a bust or gets hurt it’s not a big commitment

It really is, little risked.

Former commissioner Fay Vincent has died:

I’d completely forgotten about his plans for realignment, and the Cubs taking the case to court to oppose moving to the NL West.

Houston will retire Billy Wagner’s #13 jersey this summer.

The Yankees bring back lefty reliever Tim Hill on a one year deal. Not a blockbuster move but it helps complete the bullpen. He pitched very well for them last season.

That is good news. I think it is an excellent move. He was very good for the Yanks and it is great getting a lefty that has shown the ability to pitch in NY.

The man has been through a lot. He had colon cancer when he was 25. He has Lynch Syndrome which means he is genetically susceptible to it. He had part of his colon removed and made his way back into the major leagues. Pitching in New York is easy compared to that.

Damn, I didn’t realize that.

MLB has fired umpire Pat Hoberg for sharing a gambling app with a friend, as well as deleting information/texts from his phone regarding the investigation.

Hoberg was one of the most accurate umpires in the league.

It’s this sort of thing I have been predicting would happen. and been afraid of happening, for some time now. Tip of the iceberg, folks.

If these accusations are true, Hoberg absolutely deserved lifetime banishment.

The spread of sports gambling online is a fucking disease. This is a tiny fraction of the damage it will do. Is doing.

I gotta say it caught me off guard. Hoberg is extremely well-liked and respected. I’m shocked he got caught up in this. If it had been Angel Hernandez or someone equally terrible at their job, it would make sense.

Sports betting is a big sticky mess, and the big sports getting entangled with it makes it even worse. You’re right - this is just going to get worse.

I highly recommend Michael Lewis’s most recent season of his podcast “Against the Rules” which covers sports betting. It’s fascinating.

Skill in your job has nothing to do with your ethics.

I just meant from a perspective of justifying why someone is particularly bad at their job. Hoberg is/was quantifiably good - there wasn’t a lot of wiggle room for him to shift the balance of a game.

Pete Alonzo is back with the Mets on a 2-year deal for $54 million.

Good for both sides. The Mets now have a serious power bat to go along with Soto in making a run in '25, and Alonso, with an opt-out after this year, has incentive to prove wrong the doubters who think he’s in decline.
