MLB Pitcher Reactions to Homeruns?

What’s the most extreme MLB pitcher reactions to a homerun? And same question for fielders, particularly outfielders. The reason I ask is they’re usually really stoic about it.

For pitchers, beaning the guy on his next at bat. If the hitter “posed” or otherwise showed off, he can probably expect a pitch high and tight. If he did it against Bob Gibson, it might take 20 years and an old timer’s game, but payback is coming.

Dave Righetti threw the new baseball over the outfield fence. Here is a video.

That was more a reaction to the manager coming out to yank him from the game. But the home run immediately before certainly contributed.

You rarely see reactions immediately after the pitch because the camera is following the ball. And as you say, the pitchers are pretty stoic on the mound. You probably won’t find much worse than this.

The best tantrums are in the dugout afterwards, when they aren’t so worried about maintaining their composure for the next pitch. Julian Tavarez broke his hand punching the bullpen phone in 2004 after giving up a homer. Tim Belcher went after some cameramen in 1995 after giving up a game-winning homer.

And although it wasn’t in response to giving up a home run, Brian Wilson had one of the better tantrums after loading the bases and almost blowing a save.

1985 World Series, Game 7. Starting pitcher John Tudor got pulled in the 3rd inning. He went into the clubhouse and punched out an electric fan, slicing his hand open. Pitching in relief in the 5th inning, Joaquin Andujar disagrees with an umpire, leading to this (starting at 1:38:53).

Manager Whitey Herzong’s postgame interview was a masterpiece of fatalism. Andujar was traded to Oakland. Tudor recovered.
