Only for a Tampa Bay Rays fan, but such a thing is only a hypothetical construct.
I’d like to watch this game live, but all 15-20 sports channel I get are broadcasting UFC, which is without any doubt the worst sport ever created. Except one that’s carrying a repeat of a bowling tournament.
So instead of watching a thrilling extra inning games between arch rivals that could determine the teams that make the playoffs, I get to watch either 14 channels of white trash beating each other up, or a repeat of a bowling tournament that happened last year.
Jesus E. McChrist.

And, at this point, you’re almost watching a Pawtucket-Scranton game anyway.
ETA: Except for the 3-run shot Ells just hit. They may yet live.
What’s with the MLB regular season ending on a Wednesday this year? It’s almost like an admission that nothing really important is coming down to the wire.
Cardinals now 1 game behind Atlanta, with Atlanta to play the Phillies and the Cardinals to play the Astros.
My nightmare is that the Phillies decide they’d rather face the Braves than the Cardinals in the playoffs and hand the series to the Braves, while the Cards do that “losing to the bad teams” thing that did them in last season.
To start the playoffs earlier.
Gosh, I hate to beat up on the Rays fans again, but… Christ Jesus, they didn’t even get 20,000 fans? Their team’s on the verge of one of the greatest September comebacks in major league history, playing the Yankees, and has been a good team for a few years now. What does it take to get people to the ballpark there?
I thought attendance here in Toronto was mediocre… but Toronto is outdrawing Tampa Bay, despite being nowhere near contention and not being close to contention for 18 years. If we had a team this good they’d be packing 'em in 40,000 a night and this game would have sold out.
Tampa beats the Yanks, and the Red Sox lose to Baltimore, to tie for the Wild Card.
Hi, St. Louis. Can we talk?
We’ve been together for most of my life and we’ve had some great times. Whiteyball, '82, '85, '87, '04 and '06, the LaRussa years, Big Mac, the MV3 ver 1.0 and 2.0, and most of all, Albert Pujols. But lately I can’t help but think that the feeling isn’t mutual. For the last few years this feels like a one sided relationship. Some weeks things are great, the next week you’re trying to break my heart. Tonight was the perfect example. The Braves lost and you came back against the Astros only to lose it in extra innings. You’ve been playing with my emotions all year, and I can’t take it anymore. I think it’s time for a break. Maybe we should see other people. When you figure out what you want from this relationship please let me know. You know where to find me.
Love always,
Cell Guy
Matt Kemp’s Triple Crown hopes are basically over, but he’s still got a shot at the 40/40 club. I wonder if that would be enough to earn him the MVP.
Kemp’s already having such a good season it’s fucking ridiculous, and nobody seems to care very much. I doubt the people who won’t vote for him care whether he goes 40/40, since they haven’t had all that much to say about the fact that he’s been on pace for it most of the year. I wonder if even squeaking out a Triple Crown would sway enough people at this point; my theory is you have to get mentioned on TV as an MVP favorite a certain number of times before you have a chance, and I at least haven’t heard people talking Kemp for the last month or so. I think it’s Braun’s for sure after the last week or so, but maybe I’m wrong.
Astros refuse to roll over. Always nice to see even if they’ve got a loooong way to go.
It is pretty clear that the Rays will never draw well in their current facility. The question is whether a new stadium in a better location would fix the problem or is Tampa just not a sustainable market. Of course that is a pretty expensive thing to test.
Ozzie Guillen has been dealt to the Marlins. This doesn’t really seem like something that is going to end well.
During tonight’s victory over the Red Sox, Vlad Guerrero came around to score the go-ahead run in the 6th inning.
He got on base with his 2,587th hit, taking him past Julio Franco to move into first place on the hits list for Dominican-born players.
It was a fun game. A key play was Robert Andino’s 3-run inside-the-park homer. It looked for all the world like it was going to be an out, as Ellsbury made it all the way back to the wall and seemed to have it in his glove, but then it popped out. The relay throw beat Andino to the plate comfortably, but it was a short hop and the Saltalamacchia missed it.
Those three runs proved the difference in the game, and left the Sox and the Rays tied with 2 to play. Exciting stuff.
Tampa Bay wins 5-3. You can’t say the Yankees are lying down; they used all their best relievers.
Boston just barely held on to beat Baltimore 8-7. It comes down to tomorrow… or maybe the day after.
In the NL, Atlanta was squashed by the Phillies and the Cards are beating Houston. Oh, my.
Jered Weaver’s been benched for the rest of the season, which means Verlander has won the Triple Crown. Puts him one step closer to the MVP, I’d say.
The fact the Angels are softballing it for the final two games doesn’t bode well for the Tigers’ chances to pick up the #2 seed however.
Ah, well, Astros had an early lead on the Cardinals and I was getting all prematurely ready to make fun of the Cards for failing to make up ground 2 games in a row while playing the worst team in the league, but then that fell apart. As a consolation, if the Astros do get rolled, at least the Braves suffer.
Not long ago people were complaining that the playoffs were already set, and there needed to be an extra wild card just to have something left to play for. An extra wild card would actually have ruined it.
What an amazing end to the season. Both wild cards are tied up going into the final game. Two teams with ridiculous collapses, and two teams with inspired runs.
Not only that, but the 2 and 3 seeds in each league are both undecided going into the final game. Arizona hit a walk off grand slam to stay alive for the 2 (and avoid the Phillies) after starting the 10th off down 5 runs!
The Phillies could still end up with Arizona, Milwaukee, or St. Louis in the first round. The best scenario for them would be getting St. Louis after they play game 163.
Home field advantage. If the Tiger win and Texas loses, the Tigers win the tie breaker.
Dear Cell Guy,
You’ve meant a lot to me over the years and I’d hate to lose you. Things are complicated, so complicated that we need to talk this out. But I’m really, really busy right now. I’m not sure when my schedule will open up - maybe tonight, tomorrow, next week, the week after that or the week after that. But I’m certain everything will be cleared up by November, so let’s be sure to get together.
Love,
The Cardinals
